How do you fit relaxation and recreation into a weekend that's already full with basic chores?

Many of us work full time and have families.  How do you decide what can be left undone to allow time for necessary free time, wellness activities, relaxation?

I think it is necessary to change what we feel is necessary. So much is viewed as needing to be done when it fact it doesn't.
I have taken a step back on chores and put myself and any relaxation I need first.

I agree with you on this one.  As time passes, I feel that some things simply aren't as necessary as making sure weekends are spent nurturing ourselves and our loved ones, and taking time for fun.

I worked full-time for my entire life and I can offer three things.  One, try to fit your errands in during the week as much as possible.  Stop at the store on the way home one day, the cleaners the next, etc., and do what you can on your lunch hour.  If you work close to home, go home at noon and vacuum or clean a bathroom.  That might be a goal; sometimes you can do it and other times, you can't.  Two, prioritize and eliminate some chores.  I decided that the cleanliness of the bathrooms and kitchen was important; vacuuming carpet and dusting the blinds, not as much.  Simplify clutter and knick knacks.  Buy a Swiffer Sweeper, not the wet one but the simple dry one, and quickly run it around the hard floors and let the carpet go awhile longer.  Three, enlist spouse's involvement and the children's also.  Homework first, then a chore or two every night; goal for the family being free time on the weekend to have fun together.

Excellent answer.  I never grocery shop on the weekends.  I usually save it for Monday or Tuesday after work, which I've discovered many others do also! You have given some very helpful tips and solutions which I'm sure can help others.  Thanks!

Make a list of your chores. Look at the list and decide which chores can be broken down, (such as the grocery shopping may be done on more than one day). Do the more important ones before the weekend and the least important after the weekend.
