Can autism be cured?
This is the most pertinent question affecting parents in the Western world as autism is affecting so many of our children. While there is no miraculous cure, recent researches demonstrate that ABA combined with speech, OT and PT may improve substantially the response autistic kids to the outside world. More importantly, apart from therapy a structured approach towards life may improve kid's behavior and his/ her expectations from parents and care givers. This may require planning from dawn to dusk his/ her activities.
There is no cure for autism, no medication to take to change or neutralise the condition. But there are many ways to work with autistic people to help them become more independent and enjoy life to the full. The earlier autism is diagnosed and treated the better the opportunities to succeed in life.
Behaviour analysis as you suggest works very well for some autistic people and helps them communicate - new therapies are being developed all the time which benefit listening, speaking and coping with social interaction, so important for those with autism.
But therapists have to be sensitive to individual needs - treat the person with dignity and care - and work steadily towards small step goals.
This is what I do when I work with autistic young people using drama and physical exercises (along with speech and communication) - autistic people have their rituals and we'll never get rid of these, never cure them in that sense - but we can help them to reach goals in life, achieve a social status they would never attain otherwise, and guide them into more meaningful life choices.
