It's difficult to give up doing something that you enjoy period. (Even if you hate yourself afterwards or it hurts you in some way.)
It's been said the best way to get rid of a bad habit is to replace it with a good habit. However that is a real challenge when you're surrounded by temptation. Drinking like eating is a "social activity" for a lot of people. (Holidays, private parties, dating, and celebrations)
In addition to "will power" and "12 step programs" you might look into hypnotherapy after completing a detox program.
Ideally your mate/spouse would be supportive of your efforts. Personally speaking if it were me I'd want that person to be a non-drinker as well. However life is a personal journey.
Having said that I do know of one alcoholic whose wife drinks and they often throw large parties, BBQs, and other functions where they provide the alcohol and yet he NEVER takes a drink! In fact he often bartends at his own parties! That's not something I would recommend for most alcoholics.
