   What are common behaviors of a person with Bipolar?

   My sister in law is bi polar she has extreme ups and downs and can be very excited over something very small or could be depressed over somethin very small and it could be day to day or even sometimes hour to hour.

      That's what I've usually heard, (Extreme ups and downs) along with manic or over the top behavior when they're happy/excited.  They're also known to quickly become very depressed over life's minor disappointments.

      Don't know if she's diagnosed or not, but the person who has a lot of unhappiness and legitimate anger to be "fighting off" most of the time may try to "find and celebrate happiness" where they can get it.

   Anger is not as high of an issue with adults as is is with teens with bi polar. However I want to say from the start that I believe the term Bi Polar is thrown around WAY too much and most often without an actual diagnosis. Many times used by people who refuse to control their anger and want an excuse to ignore it.
   Bi Polar is having depression for a period of time followed by mania for a period of time.
   Mania is often a time when the person feels they have more energy than normal, racing thoughts, insomnia, and inflated self worth. While going through mania they may spend more money than normal, use drugs, have sex more than normal and talk more than normal.
   Bi Polar is more than just feeling angry or feeling depressed. It is cycle for those with rapid cycling Bi Polar (4 or more cycles per year). Some only experience one or 2 issues in their lifetime.
   Ultradian Bipolar Disorder, is VERY RARE, with cycles changing within minutes or hours. However this is such a tiny % of those with bipolar that there hasn't been enough information given out. Since it is so rare though it pretty much eliminate the majority of people who self diagnose to make up for there own issues. Also less than 3% of the population have Bi Polar so the chances of anyone knowing many people who are Bi Polar is slim unless they are in the medical field.

      Actually 3% of the population is more than you might imagine.
      According to statistics only 3% of the population identifies themselves as gay/lesbian. And yet most people know someone who is.
      I suspect real Bi-polar folks hide it if they can.

      Oh I'm sure they may know one or two, I said know Many. I mean I doubt most people know LOTS of people with Bi Polar or Gay. 3% was also high to account for the probability of those undiagnosed. Those that I have known don't hide from Docs just ppl.

      Bipolar is one of the illnesses thrown around "I'm sorry, I'm Bipolar hahaha" similar to ADD or OCD, by those who have never actually experienced the illness. I remember my friends jokingly saying "oh you must be Bipolar and thinking "Well actually..

      Very true Kris, or like the word "crazy".  Irks me. I feel like most of the time it minimizes the realities of people with mental illness or turns mental illness into a joke. I'm a bit uptight on the topic!

      I understand! Some people don't realize how much a mental illness effects someone and they joke because they have little things that could mean they have the illness, but it most likely they don't

   Usually Bipolar is accompanied by major mood swings often described as episodes. Each person is different with how many episodes they have in a year. For some it changes month to month, one month being a "low" period and the next being a "high" period. For some it can change every hour or even more often. Basically one has the feeling of not being able to control their emotions.
   It is also common for people who suffer from Bipolar to engage in impulsive behaviors such as spending all the money in their account, gambling, and taking life-threatening risks.
   Myself (I was diagnosed at age 12) I always felt like I was feeling emotions 10 times more than the average person, I could get high off of being happy. Sadness anger led to huge outbursts and the extent to which I felt these emotions made it hard to cope with the stress of normal life.
   I always imagine that Bipolar is similar to being a werewolf. For the most part you are happy and normal, but live in constant fear of the next time you turn into a monster and also you fear the day the wolf will take over completely.
