Do you think there is way too much medical information and advice on TV today?
Yes, but I don't think it's really information or advice. I think it's all marketing.
I think direct advertising of drugs only available by prescription should be illegal, and that TV "doctors" should be held accountable for the garbage "cures" they promote.
Thanks Lisa. I guess not working today I see too much TV ;-)I agree they do market heavily. I am amazed at how much pharmaceutical advertising there is with all the side effects. I am diabetic type 2 and see half a dozen medications advertised.
Greg, that sound you hear is hell freezing over...
Tim, Raw, preferably organic, okra will eliminate any diabetes has been proven and recorded.
Yes, especially about government controlled medicines which usually opposes the health of the receivers that often make the receivers drug dependent for the rest of their lives. If we used logical reasoning based on what is seen in the self-reproducing environment we would realize they are only attempting to make pharmaceutical corporations rich. Like Lisa Vollrath said, it's all marketing.
Hm. Two things are against me: I am rarely watching TV, secondly, I'm turning of the advertisements. Seems to me there's too to much of vain talking on both TV and radio.
On reading the comments in this forum I get the distinct impression that in America it’s all about drugs (medication). Whereas in the UK a lot of the medical information and advice on TV focuses on healthy lifestyle and diet in preference to too much reliance on medication; often highlighting the harmful side effects of long term dependency on medication.
Two such TV programme series my wife and I regularly watch are:-
* ‘Trust Me, I'm a Doctor’ is a BBC documentary series (now in its sixth year). A fully qualified NHS doctor who advocates holistic medicine and loathes the over prescription of drugs; in the series he educates people how they can reduce or eliminate their dependency on medication through healthier living and diet.
* ‘The Food Hospital’ is an equally successful TV series on Channel 4 in the UK, which advocates the same approach as the ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’ on BBC; the only real difference is they focus on the benefits of healthy eating to control medical conditions in preference to medication.
Both series take real live patients with real medical conditions, follow them over several months as their medical conditions improve, and as their dependence on medication is reduced or eliminated. The ‘Food Hospital’ TV series is run by a NHS GP, dietitian and a gastrointestinal specialist.

Those programs seem to be aimed at preventative medicine and I would be interested in watching. We have shows like that too. Unfortunately they are still paid for shows advertising and not really client/patient care centered. They want to sell.
As a matter of fact, here in the U.S. it is illegal to even say cure, there is less money spent when one is healed.
Yes, preventative medicine is a strong theme in these programs; and they are fascinating to watch. Fortunately in the UK the NHS is free at the point of use, so there is no commercialisation in medicine and no advertising.

What is the best online source for medical information?I seem to spend a long time trying to find good medical information when I look online. Often what comes up first in the search engines isn't very helpful. What do you do when looking for information about family medical conditions?

Why do you think the drug companies today spend so much money on media ads and not on research? In the past, very few drugs were advertised, and it seems in the last ten years media overloads us with these ads. I know it is to make money, but whatever happened to finding cures and ensuring safety...

Authors should be free to write about alternative medical treatments that they personally found useful for a minor ailment, but claiming a recipe cures all forms of stage 4 cancer, or any other serious terminal illness, is unethical. Especially if the hub is plugging a book with the same unsound...
