Should access to lifesaving drugs and medical procedures be reserved for those who have the means to pay, or should those things be dispensed equally, without regard for income?

Excellent answer, Scott.
Once again, I see someone is using multiple accounts to vote down the answers in favor of health insurance as a human right. What a shame.
The Constitution does not overrule what God requires of those that are His. But then as a journalist you probably do not understand that.
Well, Charlie, now you are getting personal. That's like saying it's obvious you have no idea what it means to be a Christian.
What's with the absurd amount of hidden answers on this question? Seems like there's a few people abusing the downvote feature.
It looks like there are a lot of people voting down answers that say healthcare is a right---but they're too chickenshit to write answers of their own, justifying their "pay up or die" mentality. Shameful!
It's someone using multiple accounts (and probably from different IP addresses). The answers all went into the negative over a handful of days.
Very true Scott I myself am from the UK and we have a National health service, (NHS) I Think it is about time the us government is did the same thing for it's citizens
Thanks, Michael. I agree.
lol ~ I don't even know where 2 begin, but here's the FACTs ~ Regardless of wether or NOT the unconscionable "TrumpsCARE" Atrocity is passed where MILLIONs of AMERICANs R Stripped of HealthCARE, or MEDICARE 4 ALL is passed, WE ALL Pay 4 it
HEALTH CARE should be for those who can PAY, pure & simple. NOTHING IS NOR SHOULD BE FREE. Grown ups realize this, only self-entitled, spoiled immature people believe that things should be granted!
If we DE-EVOLVE Backwards after the ABOMINATION called "TrumpsCARE" is passed, when MILLIONs of Americns DIE or use the Emergency ROOMs for Medical Treatment again, who PAYs that Bill? WE Do Of COURSE ~ HealthCARE is NOT just 4 the Fortunate
So, unless you can afford to pay for your cancer treatment from your own pocket, you should just die, and decrease the surplus population? Thanks, Ebeneezer Scrooge! It's very easy to say "make intelligent life choices" from your place of privilege.
That's easy to say when you're on top but how would you feel if you weren't and the means to achieve a living were almost impossible. Health is not a brand new Mercedes, it's a universal right plain and simple.
Does humanity mean anything anymore?
I'm gonna stop at "prepare for life circumstances". That is a statement of privilege. Poor people who are living from paycheck to paycheck don't have the option to prepare for catastrophic medical care. Those who cannot pay are sent home to die.
So why did you ask a question if you're not going to read an counter answer to what you believe? I'm confused.
Write an answer that doesn't begin from a place of economic privilege, justifying not providing healthcare, and I'll read it. Starting with "you should plan better" assumes that not having the means to pay for healthcare is a choice. It's not.
Thank you sir, finally someone w/reason- a GROWN UP!
I hardly think "I've got mine, so to hell with the rest of you" should be praised, or considered "grown up". When only the wealthy can afford healthcare, our whole society suffers. Having empathy, and doing things for the greater good is "grown up".
I am coming from a place of empathy. I mean no disrespect trust me, no one wants to see anyone suffer, however there are consequences to having our society believe that it is a "right" because there isn't any money to fund government health care.
@Gustavo, we Americans are TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY! The welfare system & the inane social programs are the reasons America is in a socioeconomic quagmire. People want something for nothing but it doesn't work that way. One PAYS for service!
I agree grace
Gustavo, Americans now believe that they are....ENTITLED. What happened to working & not expecting the government to be mommy & daddy, taking responsibility for one's care? If one wants healthcare, PAY for it. I shouldn't have to PAY for YOU
"Let them die then, and decrease the surplus population." ---Ebeneezer Scrooge
No need to be so dramatic, since the Constitution doesn't address healthcare, its an economic issue. In economics, every resource has an alternative use, the real question is how best to improve the healthcare system in a free society.
Then how do you have a military? Build roads? Manage international relations? We require services to prevent the country from anarchy and pay for them with taxes. No one individual is not more important than the good of society.
Our Military and foreign relations are legitimate functions of the federal government according to the Constitution, healthcare is not. If it was, why stop there? How about a basic income of say $100k a year per family ect.
Actually, The "DECLARATION of Independance", which is essentially Meaningless under Pseudo-Pres Donny, EXPLICITLY Expresses OUR Right 2 "LIFE, Liberty & Pursuit of Happiness" which is an IMPOSSIBLity without Comprehensive Health-CARE
Thank you WBA, no one owes anyone anything. When will people realize this? If one wants something, one pays. If one can't pay, DO WITHOUT & DEAL W/IT!
Except when it comes to healthcare it's "do without and die." Seems like a pretty cold stance to take. I personally don't view it as owing people anything, but just common decency.
Aime; Since you feel that it's only descent to provide for others healthcare needs. Right now Kidney and blood donations are desperately needed, so I would assume that you're on a donor list and working a second job to others with healthcare expenses
I have tried to donate blood on multiple occasions but am chronically anemic so they won't allow it.
And I pay more taxes that go towards healthcare than 90% of the population. So yes, I'm putting a lot in, and that's just fine by me.
sctt -the Constitution requires a military for protection and also covers the others you mention. Maybe you should read it. the "church" is supposed to take care of the needy, not the government.
Charlie, I own a copy of the Constitution and read it on a regular basis. Nowhere does it say that only rich people have a right to life. I also own a copy of the Bible and read it often. I clearly understand it more than some people.
wba- correct but what many people do not seem to recognize unless it is enumerated in the Constitution it is a STATE issue not a federal one. The individual states are where everyone who wants the freebies need to look.
Charlie- Congratulations, you are of course quite correct, the Federal government has no enumerated power concerning healthcare. "The right to life" is written in the Declaration of Independence not The Constitution.
I take it you don't believe in human rights? Just legal ones?
Isn't it time the constitution was updated?
How ironic that your profile is filled with articles glorifying Christianity.
scott and why is that? No scripture requires that. Scripture confirms my statement. I do help those in NEED but not those in want, do you?
2 Thess 3:10 we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
You're assuming that those who cannot afford healthcare are unemployed. I am self-employed. Crappy private insurance for a woman my age costs the same as my monthly mortgage payment.
Charlie, I don't want to pay to help someone in "want" any more than you. But I just paid $7,000 for a 1-hour retina detachment surgery to avoid going blind in my left eye. How many poor people can afford those kinds of costs?
scott- thanks oblunder and his ilk. but tha does not justify your slanderous comment . you need to not write what you do not understand-- your reason is selfish and incorrect--a liberal wish
Charlie, you didn't answer my question. It's also becoming clear that you are not a real Christian.
scott- I did answer it, just read the other comments on here. You bashers of the followers of Christ love to nip at our heels, but unfortunately you are almost always wrong. .
Charlie, I do follow Christ. I'm just not one of the fake followers who quote the Bible, don't understand it and then sneer at people in need.
Now we get the "Cafeteria Christianity" BS ~ REAL Christians know the BIBLE also says "An Eye 4 An Eye" which is WHY every Medical Professional must REFUSE 2 Treat ALL Republicans who SUPPORT the "TrumpsCARE HOLOCAUST", it's an ABOMINATION
ap- not true at all. scripture does not say that today, that was for the previous age. we live under mercy and grace in this age. you clearly have no understanding of what God says or thinks.
It's funny how Health care provider (Hospitals are 501 (3) C) non profit and yet get 1 trillion dollars and year.
lol ~ Charlie, I'm not sure what "STRAIN" of NEO-Christianity u Subscribe 2, but if U Believe JESUS or GOD would approve of the "GOP HEALTHCare Holocaust" 2 STRIP Ins. from AMERICANs & GIVE 1 TRILLION 2 the Greedy, that's UNFORGIVABLE
Charile, totally agree w/you. Healthcare is & should be...a PERSONAL choice. The government has NO BUSINESS in healthcare. Grown-ups KNOW this & ACT accordingly. Plan & pay or....DO WITHOUT, it's so simple really. I SHOULDN'T PAY YOUR
Grace ~ If we REGRESS Back 2 the Dinosaur Days where MILLIONs R Unisnured, who pays for their HealthCARE anyway?? The COMMUNITY does & that's a FACT ~ This "TrumpsCARE SCAM" is an ABOMINABLE WEALTH Transfer SCHEME Period ~ It's CRIMINAL
