Ours is a very youth-oriented society. No one wants to be thought of as "old"; and, yet, one of our greatest assets are our seniors. They are a goldmine of experience, knowledge, wisdom, historical antedotes; and, other information.
Unfortunately, we tend to "throw away" our seniors and treat them as if they are invisible. Many of us feel that they have no further contributions to make to society. We don't have the patience to listen to an elderly person who takes a bit longer to tell his/her story. It's no wonder no one wants to be thought of as "old".
In countries such as China, where seniors are revered, there is not this same need to appear younger than they are.
