I have been retired from paid employment since 1995 when, at fifty-nine, I took voluntary redundancy. That means I'm now in the 16th year of my 'retirement.'
I've had a very adventurous life, yet these last fifteen years have been the most enjoyable and most productive years. I love being retired. The freedom! In retirement, I've written books, gone on holidays with like-minded people, pursued my public speaking interests (670 audiences and 36,000 people have heard my stories) I've entered and won writing and speaking competitions.
Oh, and I still pump iron at the gym and have the same bodyweight I had at twenty. Yep, and I still drink beer and have a glass of red. Life if good.
Don't ever let anyone tell you that people don't enjoy their retirement. If they don't, it is by choice. There are just so many opportunities waiting: enjoyable voluntary work, membership of all manner of retiree organisations. I learned about the Internet in retirement! And I expect that a very big percentage of people who contribute on Hubpages are, like me, retired.
