Is the diagnoses bipolar thrown around too loosely? Are most bipolar people misdiagnosed?
I think there is a lot of debate about that even among medical people. Many bi-polar people may go undiagnosed and be considered to have other problems and some people are diagnosed as bi-polar who aren't.
People should see more than one doctor before accepting a diagnosis. I have the feeling doctors may give out medication too easily for this disorder.
It is just unbelievable how many BP people we have today, all around the world, while 20 years ago it was very rare disease... BP became very "in".
Some people accept BP diagnosis, because they feel guilty because of "ups and downs" they have in the mood , what usually happens when they cannot cope with difficulties in life, that is traumatic for many.
Some people have hormonal imbalance - as a product of. e.g. thyroid disease - they also can get BP diagnosis, because symptoms of thyroid problems completely match BP symptoms... Some people have lack of certain nutrients in the body - that causes extreme behavioural changes - they also get BP diagnosis.
Some people like to be on medications so accept BP diagnosis, or any other mental disorder diagnosis that would give them opportunity to get numb .
Some people get various behavioural problems after misuse of alcohol or drugs - nothing to do with BP, but they get BP diagnosis.
Of course, medications make situation worse, if BP disorder is misdiagnosed, and so often it is.

I have been a horse person for most of my life, and I have noticed that people do not like to admit that they don't know anything about them. I have had people ask me to ride my horse and when I ask them if they know how to ride, and if they have ever been thrown, they always say yes they know...
