Your'e probably not going to like what I have to say, but here goes:
1. Anti depressants do not produce serotonin, they only are for reuptake of serotonin. The only substance that produces serotonin is trytophan, present in turkey, milk, and whole grains. Such as oats.
2. anti anxiety medication only works for about 2 weeks, then they have to up the dose. Any dosage above 2mg a day of xanax increases the likely hood of addiction. As well as sleeping pills, very addictive.
3.Insomnia is a lack of melatonin, a direct result of a lack of serotonin, and tryptophan. They go hand in hand. As well as a lack of b complex vitamins that are a necessary co factor to produce melatonin, and other neuro transmitters.
4. Some of the anti depressants change the receptors in the brain, or they forget how to function.
With that said, You cannot quit these meds cold turkey, nor should you try.
Alternate days, or skip days, until you taper off, to lessen the withdrawals. The withdrawals are very real. Get the support from a physician, to monoter your dosing.Include the foods I mentioned above in your diet, melatonin may be used as stated already, but do not combine with sleeping pills. A low dose b complex, may also be of help. Insomnia, and anxiety are a side effect of many anti depressants. I would speak to my physician, before attempting any new regime, but maybe by switching the meds, you may find relief. It is nothing to be taken lightly. All of us are different, what works for one may not work for another.
