The Many Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar

Updated on July 7, 2015

The Many Uses Of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can be used in recipes and as a home remedy to help with everything from athletes foot to losing weight and hot flashes.

It can also be used to unclog drains, as a mold inhibitor, as a gardening agent to increase soil acidity in hard water areas, and is also great for for killing weeds.

Apple cider vinegar can also be used as part of your beauty regimen when added to your rinse water to clarify your hair.

And remember those volcanoes that you made in 3rd grade with baking soda and vinegar? (See Baking soda uses)

You can't get much more versatile than that! And the cost can't be beat.

All Apple Cider Vinegar Is Not Created Equal

The best type of apple cider vinegar for use as a home remedy is organic apple cider vinegar.

The differences between raw organic apple cider vinegar and processed, distilled (pasteurized) apple cider vinegar:

Raw organic apple cider vinegar contains the mother (living nutrients and bacteria), the stuff that looks like sediment and sometimes seaweed at the bottom of the bottle.

Pasteurized apple cider vinegar (the most common type sold in grocery stores) wont have the mother. The raw organic apple cider vinegar also contains malic acid, potassium, acetic acid, calcium and ash which have been stripped from the pasteurized apple cider vinegar.

If your grocery store doesn't stock organic apple cider vinegar you can usually find it at a health food store or you can order it from an online health food store.

Cough Remedy When Nothing Else Works

Another use we have recently found for apple cider vinegar is for coughing.

Mix together in a cup:

1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar

1 tablespoon honey

1 tablespoon boiling hot water

Drink it down quick! Your coughing should subside within a few minutes.

My son had a cough that was keeping him awake and he tried this (after trying just about every OTC cough remedy available) and it stopped within minutes!

Then I got whatever it was that he had and I tried this and it worked (tastes terrible!).

People at work have tried it and it has worked for almost everyone.

My Dad - Apple Cider Vinegar Advocate

My dad has always been one of apple cider vinegar's biggest advocates.

He reminds me of how the father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding was with the Windex!

We used to joke, "Your date stood you up? Hate your job? Have a flat tire? A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar will cure that."

One time I grabbed the hot iron and remembered that my dad had told me to use vinegar and then ice on a burn to take the sting out. It really worked, I didn't even get a blister!

Another time my ear hurt and my dad suggested that I put apple cider vinegar in my ear and it clogged my ear and I couldn't hear for 2 days! But it must have knocked out whatever was brewing inside of my ear because it didn't hurt any more after it drained.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Acne and Skin Care

Apple Cider Vinegar works better than expensive skin care products for acne and to keep your skin smooth and clear. It's also free from the dangerous chemicals that are used in the acne products.

It's best to use a 1:3 ratio and apply to affected skin after washing your face.

When your skin has cleared and the acne is gone you can use the ACV as a maintenance toner and splash it on your face after washing your face.

Just remember that ACV is rather smelly but the smell does dissipate after awhile.

I wouldn't recommend using ACV straight out of the bottle since it is an acid.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Hot Flashes!

One of the best uses I have found for apple cider vinegar is as a natural remedy for hot flashes!

One day an acquaintance was complaining about hot flashes and I told her that I had read about using apple cider vinegar for hot flashes. She was skeptical but decided to try it anyway. When I saw her about 2 weeks later she thanked me profusely for recommending apple cider vinegar, she had not had a hot flash in over a week and a half!

I started thinking about it and I believe that the reason that I never had hot flashes when I was going through menopause is because I have used apple cider vinegar for years.

More Uses For Apple Cider Vinegar

1. Apple Cider Vinegar For Acid Reflux

Works almost instantly for acid reflux. 1 tablespoon in as little water as you can tolerate (or if you're brave just drink it down). Acid reflux is caused from too LITTLE acid not too much.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Natural Hair Clarifying Treatment.

Add 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar to a gallon of warm water and shake or stir to distribute evenly. Shampoo your hair and then rinse with the apple cider vinegar/water making sure to distribute throughout your hair. Rinse your hair well and condition. You can do this a couple of times a week to remove product build up.

My grandma used to do this to our hair every couple of weeks when we were kids.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar Gargle For Natural, Immediate Sore Throat Relief

Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water and gargle as needed.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar For Bee, Jellyfish, Wasp, Hornet Stings

Apply apple cider vinegar with a cotton ball immediately. You can also apply ice to the area.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar For Sunburn Relief

If you gently pat apple cider vinegar on the sunburned areas it soothes and cools immediately. You can also fill a bathtub about halfway with water and add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. This is also good for dry, itchy skin.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar For A Yeast Infection

Douche with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with a quart of warm water 2 times daily.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar For Allergies

I drink an 8 ounce glass of water with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every day and my allergies have improved a lot.

8. Apple Cider Vinegar For Arthritis Relief

A 6-8 ounce glass of water with the tablespoon of apple cider vinegar is also supposed to help arthritis.

9. Apple Cider Vinegar For Weight Loss

The 6-8 ounce glass of water with the tablespoon of apple cider vinegar is also helpful for weight loss.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar For Any Kind Of Burn (not a serious burn)

Like my iron burn. Swab the area with apple cider vinegar and apply ice. It should take the sting and any pain away immediately and you should not blister depending on how quickly you applied the apple cider vinegar.

11. Apple Cider Vinegar as a natural deodorant

Apply under your arms will work as a deodorant (not an anti-perspirant) the smell dissipates. Let it dry before you get dressed.

12. This one uses plain white vinegar but was worth including.

Equal amounts of white vinegar and water will attract and kill fruit flies. Put some in a bowl on your counter and you wont have fruit flies.

13. A great mosquito and flea repellant.

Combine in a spray bottle: 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/3 cup of witch hazel (or vodka), 5 drops of essential oil of citronella or eucalyptus oil.

14. Apple cider vinegar will act as a flea repellant for dogs.

Add 1/2 teaspoon per quart of water. It will make the dogs skin too acidic for fleas.

***Don't use apple cider vinegar in your cats water because cats have a very sensitive pH level.

15. Apple Cider Vinegar For Itch Relief From Bug Bites

Again almost instant relief. My son stepped into a fire ant nest and the only relief that he got was from apple cider vinegar. The sooner that you can apply it the better.

I remember my Great Aunt Clara making switchel for the guys when they were working in the fields. I loved helping her make it but I didn't particularly like the taste. She didn't call it "switchel" she called it punch and made it in huge batches.

Switchel Recipe:

1 gallon of water

2 cups sugar

1 cup molasses

1 cup apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons grated raw ginger

Preparation :

Combine the ingredients and stir very well. It helps if the molasses are heated a little so that they combine well with the other ingredients. Serve very cold and/or over ice.

@Judy Filarecki: I don't think that it matters if it's white or red vinegar for burns. I used white on a burn and it worked.

As a child, we spent almost everyday at the beach along the Atlantic Ocean. when we got home, we took a shower and then wiped down with vinegar. I don't remember which vinegar it was , but it definitely took the sting out .

My aunti always used it when she was doing a proper clean up in the bathroom. She swore by it and got pretty annoyed if someone suggested she used anything else. :)

Trader Joe's has a wonderful organic apple cider vinegar, and it comes in handy for many of the reasons you mention here. My husband also likes it for making flavored vinegars with fresh herbs that we grow. I liked the stories about your dad.
