Aromatherapy for Health - How to Apply Essential Oils

Updated on February 22, 2010

Aroma means fragrance and therapy means treatment so aromatherapy means treatment with use of fragrance. As you know, aromatherapy essential oils are extracted from natural herbs and plants, so each type of plant has a different smell, a group of properties and particulars which can be used and has its own market value. Whether it is for health purposes or for beauty purposes, aromatherapy essential oils should not be applied directly to skin as they are highly concentrated. It becomes really necessary to dilute aromatherapy essential oils with other oils or water. Essential oils can also be combined together to produce therapeutic energy to generate a more powerful and beneficial healing effect on the body. That is why it is important to understand the science of aromatherapy and to know the creativity and the art of aromatherapy in order to produce different types of blends and essential oil cocktails. As I have discussed in my previous article, benefits of aromatherapy for health are not only limited to physical factors but also include emotional factors, as aromatherapy essential oils heal physical and mental conditions outside and inside the body respectively. An aromatherapy essential oil wakes up our tired senses and stimulates them to make us more alert and active than before.

How to Apply Essential Oils of Aromatherapy?

The best method for application of essential oils of aromatherapy is through dilution in hot water because by doing this, the water vapor gets mixed with the essence and gets absorbed in our body through the respiratory system.

Another method of application of essential oils is by using a blend of essential oils with other oils just like how we make a cocktail. Before making an essential oil cocktail, you need not to worry a lot about the side effects of herbal oils, as these precious plant oils have no side effects.

You can combine grapeseed oil, safflower, and sweet almond oil with two drops of 100% pure lavender essential oil. Now learn how to make a blend of essential oils in the youtube video below.

Whichever method of essential oil application you use, these wonder oils will penetrate through the small pores and capillaries of our body and then get transported throughout our body through the bloodstream. This whole process only takes 20 or 25 minutes. Essential oils have an advantage that they can be easily and safely applied directly on treatment area plus the benefits of essential oils and aromatherapy are faster than an over‑the-counter oral drug.

The most important thing that concerns the proper application of aromatherapy essential oils is choosing the right candidate before you start the treatment. Some people do not like certain types of smells or sometimes have a bad memory of a particular odor and these type of people will not get maximum benefit because of this natural phenomenon. That is why it becomes important for the aromatherapist to classify and distinguish different types of smells and then check and select the right oil for the right candidate. For this reason, it becomes important for the aromatherapist to fully investigate whether the person is allergic to a smell emotionally or not.

Least but not last if you are applying aromatherapy for health, then it becomes really important to learn how to apply essential oils to get maximum benefit and treat that health problem at the exact point.
