Lose Weight Eating Beans: Simple Weight Loss Diet
Time for a Change
A few months ago, my partner and I decided we needed to make some serious changes in our diets. After giving up smoking over ten years ago we both had packed on the pounds. Sixty pounds each to be exact. Yikes! The final nail in our food coffin was placed after a visit to my doctor. I was on the verge of needing blood pressure medication and my cholesterol was high. But with so many diets out there and a tight budget to boot, we had no idea where to start on our quest for a healthier lifestyle.
The 4-Hour Body
Finding Help in Unexpected Places
My husband is a technology nut and one of his favourite magazines is Wired, a monthly mag that reports on new technology. And it was in this magazine that he was introduced to the wild and wacky world of Tim Ferris. (Who would have thought a techno-nerd magazine would have the secret to weight loss in it?)
Tim Ferris is a pretty polarizing personality. You either think he has some awesome ideas or that he's totally crazy. His latest book “The 4 Hour Body,” which is a follow up to his best seller “The 4 Hour Work Week” has some pretty radical ideas about diet and exercise. He has a simple approach that included drinking red wine and eating steak so my husband was in! And this is where our bean love affair and our weight loss began.
The Journey of a Thousand Beans
I won’t go into the nuts and bolts of his eating plan, the book is a quick read for anyone who is serious about it. But here are the Coles Notes – eat a lot of beans, protein and veggies and give up bread, pasta, potatoes, rice sugar and fruit. It’s not no carb, it’s slow carb. Oh and one day a week eat whatever the heck you want. Simple right? And so we began eating beans with everything. Easily a cup with every meal instead of the starches we used to have. And you know what it worked! And is still working. (And no I don’t work for Tim Ferris or the bean farmers of America; I’m just a chubby girl trying to get healthy.)

So now I’m a total convert. Seriously beans rock! They are filled with protein and nutrients, are low in fat, and high in fiber. And they keep your blood sugar in check so you don’t feel the urge to snack constantly. The most comprehensive nutritional info I have seen on beans is at the livestrong website in case you feel the need to get all knowlegded up about them. My favs are the wee black beans. So yummy and they go with anything. I throw a little salsa on them with my morning eggs and then have them again for lunch with a little fajita spice and guac. So versatile and delicious and man do they fill me up.
Saving the dollars!
And here’s the nice little kicker with this new eating plan, our grocery bill is actually smaller! Beans are not expensive. Making a menu plan and sticking to it saves you money. We’re two months in and over 20lbs down each. Hopefully in another 6 months I can add an update to this hub and say that we’ve finally reached our pre-smoking weight.
The Bottom Line: Losing weight doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated; you just have to find a sensible plan that works for you. Go Beans!
