Bed Rest Activities

Updated on July 10, 2014

30 activities you can do on pregnancy bed rest

Are you on pregnancy bed rest because of a high risk pregnancy? Are you having trouble trying to figure out what to do with all that extra time? Then you've come to the right place!

Here are more than 30 activities that you can do if you're on bed rest.

This list was originally made for my sister. Just 28 weeks into her pregnancy with twins she was put on "strict" bed rest. I put together this list of bed rest activities to prevent her from getting the Bed Rest Blues.

To make bed rest easier on you

Stay comfortable with a bed rest pillow. A bed rest pillow can make it easier to sit up and will offer support for your back.

Before using, make sure to ask your doctor if you're allowed to sit up. If not, this rest pillow would be a better choice.

5 things to do while on bed rest

  1. Organize your photos
  2. Balance your checkbook
  3. Piece together a fun jigsaw puzzle
  4. Catch up on your correspondence
  5. Learn a foreign language

Watch the newest movie releases

Go shopping!

Just because you're on bed rest doesn't mean you can't shop for baby. There are thousands of online stores to choose from! A great way to shop and still save money is by joining Ebates. They have over 1200 stores to choose from, with coupons for most of them. Just shop through their links and you'll get cash back for every purchase!

To make bed rest easier on you

A bed tray is an essential item when you're prescribed bed rest. You can choose between a simple lap tray or a tray on wheels.

Just keep in mind that as your pregnancy progresses, it might become more difficult to use a regular lap tray.

5 more things to do while on bed rest

  1. Update your address book
  2. Complete crossword puzzles
  3. Start a journal for your baby to read when he or she is older
  4. Make a to-do list for your hubby to follow after the baby comes (who to call, etc)
  5. Give yourself a manicure

5 other things to do on bed rest

  1. Research pediatricians, daycares and preschools
  2. Start a blog
  3. Create a budget
  4. Create a gift registry online and tell your friends and family about it.

    Amazon Baby Registry

    Walmart Baby Registry

    Babies R Us Baby Registry

  5. Use Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter to keep family and friends updated on your pregnancy

Start a scrapbook

After baby comes, you'll probably spend every spare moment trying to catch up on sleep, so now's the time to start baby's scrapbook. You can organize the pages now, and then add the pictures later!

To make bed rest easier on you

On those days when you feel like you're going to go nuts if you have to stay in bed even one more minute, this could be the one thing that brings a smile to your face.

Listen to your baby's heartbeat.

Hear her hiccups. You can even hear her kicks.

Graco Prenatal Listener

Walmart Price: Under $25

This fetal doppler amplifies the sounds your baby makes in the womb, allowing you to listen to their heartbeat, hiccups and other movements. You can even record the sounds and transfer them to your computer via usb cable.

Another 5 things to do while on bed rest

  1. Discover your hidden artistic talent
  2. Relearn the words to all your favorite lullaby's
  3. Invite your girlfriends over for a bedroom gossip session
  4. Take a free online class
  5. Address the envelopes for your baby announcements

Choose a baby name!

This is the fun part! What kind of name are you going to pick? Are you going to name your child after a relative? Or maybe your favorite movie character? Or are you wanting to give your baby a unique name? Or how about a classic name with a unique spelling? A baby name book can help you figure out the perfect name for your baby.

And last, but not least.....Sleep!

Rest up while you still have the opportunity to do so. Once those midnight and 3 am feeding and diaper changing sessions begin, you'll start to wish you were back on bed rest. So take advantage of it while you still can!

For those that are wanting an update, my sister made it through 4 weeks of bed rest before she went into labor. Although she was only 32 weeks along, both Marley and Gordon were born healthy and both came home within a month. Now they, along with my niece, are keeping my sister very busy!

What are some other activities that would be good while on bed rest?

Great Lens! My sister-in-law is 5 months pregnant, so naturally we are scouring the Internet for tips. Thanks so much!

Oh, forgot to mention that most of my time was spent on the couch. We put a shower curtain on it and covered it with a blanket in case my water broke, so I wouldn't ruin the couch.

This would have been great to read 12 years ago, when I first went on bedrest. I was on bedrest with both my pregnancies, and I remember that I read a lot, painted my nails a lot, and watched a lot of TV and movies.

You were very kind to make this list for your sister!

Thanks for a great list of bed rest ideas. I've had some problems with my back before and am concerned I might be put on bed rest when I get pregnant someday. If that happens, I will definitely come back to this lens for ideas to combat bed rest blues!

You've covered most of it! I didn't have a good Internet connection during my six (yes six long months!!) of bedrest. Almost went nuts. Read a lot, planned the shopping and cooking, slept a lot. Wish I had had those pillows!

Not been feeling well for the last 3 days or so, but I try and eat well and walk so I can get well soon. Complete bed rest makes me more sick. Nice innovative Lens.

I really like your lens. Here are two more things you could do. You could watch TV and play video games.
