Best Electric Toothbrush For Kids

Updated on August 23, 2017

Which Electric Toothbrush Is The Best For Your Children

In this article we'll take a look at the best electric toothbrush for kids, as well as why good dental hygiene is so important for children. And it's about more than just having clean teeth.

Let's face it, getting kids to brush their teeth at all is difficult. Getting them to brush their teeth well is another story altogether. Because of that more and more parents are finding that selecting a high quality toothbrush is important to ensure that they can maximize the brushing benefits of those brief, or incomplete, brushes.

With new advances in micro technology, manufacturers like Sonicare have been able to develop some first in class toothbrushes that clean far better than brushes from just a few years ago, and exponentially better than a manual brushing. It's precisely this ability to clean deeper and better that sets the new models apart from the others. But there are still so many options so let's take a look at what makes a great electric toothbrush. Let's find out which is the best electric toothbrush for kids.

Please, take a moment to share this with others.

Why does it matter so much, and why is it important to have the best electric toothbrush for kids that you can? Its so important that organizations have spent a lot of money to help kids learn. The link below to 2min2x has great a great brush your teeth song that makes brushing fun. According to an article at the American Dental Association titled Take Two Minutes To Brush, which discusses the Ad Council's efforts to get children and parents to better understand the importance proper brushing, it's an extremely big deal. They write:

"The mouth is the gateway to a person's overall health, and an unhealthy mouth can be associated with obesity, diabetes and even heart disease, according to the Ad Council news release. In the U.S., oral disease causes kids to miss 51 million school hours and their parents to lose 25 million work hours annually. Additionally, oral disease disproportionately affects children from low-income families and these children have almost twice the number of decayed teeth that have not been treated by a dentist as compared to others in the general population."

Among other obvious contributors, there's a likely correlation between the low-income family's ability to purchase top rated dental hygiene products, such as electric toothbrushes and oral rinse machines, and the heightened instance of tooth decay the ADA article mentioned. It stands to reason that awareness is also lacking, in many cases, on the part of parents of children with dental problems caused by lack of, or improper brushing.

In one Ad Council survey, they found that just 44% of parents (not even half) say that their kids brush their teeth at least two times per day. And therein lies the problem, and why I think it's

crucial for parents to start children as early as possible on a journey of healthy living that includes their mouth. It is clear that children who are raised to brush their teeth and floss regularly, and who consider it fun or just part of life (routine), are much less likely to have dental problems later, and less prone to having the lack of dental care contributing to major health consequences.

Here's a great page for all parents to help them teach their kids all about brushing, and to make it fun. It's called 2min2x and its sponsored by the Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives and its 35 partner organizations. They say brush kids' teeth for 2 minutes, 2 times a day.

What can you do? Because you found this article its apparent that you care and are on the right track. Use the links I provided above and start finding ways to make brushing fun, and teaching your kids along the way. Below is a review of what I believe to be the very best electric toothbrush for kids (and adults), and if I were replacing ours today it's the one I would purchase.

There is, in the opinion of many, one undisputed champ among electric toothbrushes, and that is the Sonicare DiamondClean. Why is it important for kids? Because as we've discussed many children don't brush long enough or correctly, so we need to maximize that time they do spend brushing, and in that regard this Sonicare delivers. Let's say that your child only brushes for 1 minute; isn't it better to know that for that one minute they received the best possible cleaning?

Anyone looking to find a great value, one that out-performs its cost, then this is an easy choice. Good Housekeeping gave this brush an A rating and said "With its diverse range of features and great consumer ratings, the Philips Sonicare was one of our favorite electric toothbrushes." Over at WIRED they called it an "Unexpectedly High-Tech Toothbrush". Finally, BizJournals called the new DiamondClean and the AirFloss "Revolutionary."

How about actual users? At Amazon, the Sonicare DiamondClean has a 4 1/2 out of 5 Star rating based on 267 customer reviews (at time of writing).. read them here.

So why is this the best electric toothbrush for kids? Let's have a look at the feature set.

Removes up to 5X more plaque than a manual toothbrush

This is no small thing. Tests show that the DiamondClean removes more of the plaque that builds up in hard to reach places, when compared to a manual toothbrush.

Improves gum health in only two weeks

Sonicare's engineered performance provides the highest level of cleaning between and around teeth, and along the gumline, both of which can improve gum health in as little as two weeks.

Whitens teeth more than 2x better than a manual toothbrush

Dynamic cleaning action drives fluid between teeth

This where superior design matters. Sonicare delivers great cleaning action which actually helps ensure a better cleaning in those tightest of spaces by driving fluid between the teeth during brushing.

DiamondClean brush head for Sonicare's best cleaning

Giving this model its name, DiamondClean brush heads (Sonicare's best) have diamond shaped bristles which are very gentle yet effectively scrape away more plaque.

Dual Charging System includes a charging glass and travel case.

This is a huge selling point for lots of people. This electric toothbrush comes with a charger glass into which you set it to recharge. But, it also comes with a charging travel case that connects to your laptop or other USB device for charging... you can take this toothbrush everywhere you go!

Quadpacer interval timer that promotes thorough brushing

Ideally we all brush our teeth for two minutes, which means spending 30 seconds for each quadrant. The Sonicare DiamondClean has a built in timer that reminds you with a signal to switch to the next area. Also includes a 2 minute timer to ensure that you're brushing for the minimum recommended time.

Sensitive Mode: Gentle teeth and gum cleaning

This complete home system includes a special soft setting for those have sensitive gums.

Amazon reviewer "lln30260" writes:

"I have always used the "best" and most "expensive" Oral B brushes. This diamond clean was my first sonicare purchase and I was skeptical of "sonic vibration". I thought yeah right. But I love it!! It is the best oral care brush ever made."

The Best First Electric Toothbrush For Children

For Very Young Kids Just Learning To Brush Their Teeth

For some people the cost of the DiamondClean is just too much. (Note, as of writing Amazon had it listed for 24% off) Others may have very small children just starting to brush their teeth and so are looking for something "fun" to teach them with.

Because of that I am including here a brief overview of the Sonicare for Kids Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, because in the end the most important thing is getting them to brush often and brush well. It features:
