Working out with weights is by far the best way to develop the various muscle groups in your body. There are plenty of equipment choices that will help you reach your fitness goals. The two most popular choices are exercise machines and free weights. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, the trick is to do a comparison and choose the one that is best suited to your individual needs.

Today's free weights are available in the form of bar bells and dumbbells. Dumbbells are generally available as a single weight size though there are a number of companies that make dumbbells that have interchangeable plates. The use of free weights gives you a lot of flexibly especially for the beginner. Your muscle building programs can start out with lower weights and gradually build up as your strength grows. Free weights are also beneficial for strengthening the entire body because your entire body is supporting the weights.

The major advantage of exercise machines over free weights is they are safer and sometimes easier to use. The guides on these machines control the direction of the weight path making them good for someone that wants to work out with heavy resistance but doesn't have a spotter. The exercise machines provide some added safety and convenience but if you're a little bit taller or shorter you may fit you have to accommodate the machine rather than the machine accommodating you.

      Personally I prefer to use natural movement to do a workout, like using dumbbell instead of using machine. Like my lens on how to get big biceps naturally, I just use natural movement to build up biceps such as, pull-ups, push-ups and bench press.

      Free weights are definitely better for building muscular mass!

      The machines are more effective for isolation and definition! ;)

      Building muscles is not just for gaing strength, it is essential to do proper exercises after injuries too. In this case best method is the one with god instructor:)
