What Treatments Are There To Ease Blepharitis Symptoms?

Updated on April 19, 2013

My Blepharitis Story

What is Blepharitis?

I have had problems with my eyes for around 4 years and was back and forward to my GP's and specialists on numerous occasions during that time. I was diagnosed as having Dry Eye Syndrome and was prescribed various types of drops, varying from giving me relief for 15 minutes to absolutely no help at all. Some days I had to go home from work because of the discomfort, the grittyness, the redness, the constant blinking and wiping with tissues. I was again sent to see another specialist who this time diagnosed Blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelids. I was expecting some kind of miracle cure now that they had eventually gotten to the root of the problem. Nooooo! I was advised that I administer a hot towel or facecloth 3 or 4 times a day (how do you do that when you are work and driving etc) wash my eyelids with baby shampoo and keep using the drops that worked best for me (in my case HYLO-tear)

I persevered with this technique as best I could for around 3 months with no apparent benefit, until one day I was so frustrated that I went on the internet and had a look around for anything else out there that could give me a bit of relief (anything had to be better than how I was feeling then). After having a look at a few sites, mostly they were advising the old facecloth and baby shampoo trick. I then happened across a review site on Blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelids , that was the day that my life changed forever.

What I found was a simple daily regime which included - Heat, Cleansing and Nutrition. I have been carrying out this process for about 6 months now and the difference is unbelievable, I can't praise it highly enough.

Good luck and please drop me a note to let me know how you are getting on with your NEW life.

What is Blepharitis? and what causes Blepharitis

Blepharitis Explained

Blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelids is an inflammation of the eyelids causing red, irritated, itchy eyelids and the formation of dandruff-like scales on eyelashes. It is a common eye disorder caused by either bacterial or a skin condition such as dandruff of the scalp or acne rosacea. It affects people of all ages. Although uncomfortable, Blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelids is not contagious and generally does not cause any permanent damage to eyesight.

Blepharitis is classified into two types:

1.Anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge of the eyelid where the eyelashes are attached. (It is commonly caused by bacteria of the scalp and eyebrows)

2.Posterior blepharitis affects the inner edge of the eyelid that comes in contact with the eyeball. (can be caused by irregular oil production by the glands of the eyelids which creates a favorable environment for bacterial growth)

Individuals with blepharitis may experience a gritty or burning sensation in their eyes, excessive tearing, itching, red and swollen eyelids, dry eyes, or crusting of the eyelids. For some people, blepharitis causes only minor irritation and itching. However, it can lead to more severe signs and symptoms such as blurring of vision, missing or misdirected eyelashes, and inflammation of other eye tissue, particularly the cornea.
