Bronchial Asthma and Pollinosis Due to Acacia Trees

The author is from South Indian village, of the tropical South-West coastal region. He has lot of interest in farm science and agriculture.

Pollinosis asthma

Who will not enjoy a morning walk by the woodside footpath? It will be refreshing, cool and calm with good ambience with a light breeze and chirping birds actively flying everywhere, bees pollinating the freshly opened flowers. We all love the good fragrance of nature.

This is not so every time, as the torrential rains in the tropics may not allow you to walk independently enjoying yourself without umbrella, raincoat and gumboots. In the temperate places, the winter will be so harsh that the wind will freeze you with snowfall. Now, I'm talking about repeatedly sneezing and tear bursting or becoming breathlessly suffocating in the fine spring or autumn and collapsing during the walk. Chest feels too heavy and unable to pump air and somehow, you want to escape from the fatigue. This is a sort of asthma attack, making you and nearby people embarrassed without knowing what to do. If you have already had asthma, then you will be collapsing down.

Asthma due to allergy and asthma attack may happen when you get exposed to pollens, dust, tiny mites, etc entering into the lungs. Knowing the first-aid and keeping it always handy is useful. Allergies are not common to all, but only to some sensitive individuals.

Acacia menace

In this case, I'm referring to the acacia pollen. The tree bears very attractively looking yellow flowers giving the tree golden jewellery adorned look. Allergy caused by tree pollen is also common. In general, the pollen has an outer exine made up of sporopollenin of two layers and inner intine of cellulose and pectin. Pollen grains are in a group of four cells called tetrads or more than four cells called polyads.

The acacia flowers in the summer or early rainy season in masses. The entire tree looks very beautiful because of the evergreen tree bearing bright yellow flowers. The pollen grains of this tree causes allergy to children and also to adults. Since these pollens are very heavy, they fall near the tree itself as yellow dust. These cause roughness of eye and tear flow. It also causes allergic sneezing and Pollinosis. Skin irritations are not much detectable. Pollen grains from grasses also cause severe allergy.

I had a discussion with our physician regarding this. He was kind enough to explain to me these things. Hope it will be useful to you as well.

The pollen grains, small insects, dust particles, chemical molecules, aerosol droplets etc. are of few microns to 300 microns size and are floating and drifting in the air. These easily enter the eyes, ears and nostrils. Those getting in the eyes may cause conjunctivitis symptoms due to itching, irritation and corneal inflammations. Those entering the ears may cause pain in the ears. Those entering in the nostrils will move to the lungs through the bronchial path and some will be deposited in the mucous. Once the body recognizes the allergen, it wants to throw it out, you start sneezing.

Allergens

The allergic reaction to eyes is called Rhinoconjunctivitis and fever caused by pollen is called Pollinosis. Similarly fungus, certain foodstuff, some kind of oils, cocoa chocolates, egg protein, meat, some tree fruits, plant juices, insects bites, bee or wasp sting, ticks, mites, mosquitoes, etc. also cause allergy. These are thus called by different nomenclature. We here are getting to know more about the allergy caused due to the social forestry tree Acacia auriculiformis (Wattle).

Reactions

The allergen left inside the body starts reacting with antibody as antigens. Cross reaction of body immunoglobulin IgE antibodies with pollen proteins antigens causes allergy. Read more on immune systems in the specific articles.

He further explained that this reaction is mediated by hormones called histamines, releasing reaction proteins, which form allergy. If the allergic antigen dose is more, you may get fever, body pain, etc.

Diagnosis

In order to test the allergic reactions usually, physicians depend on the laboratories which do other ELISA test for Western Blot test to find out the antibodies. The presence of antibodies confirms whether the particular symptom is due to allergy or not.

Treatments

First-aid

Sitting upright after immediately getting inside the room under the fan and a sip of hot coffee (ginger coffee) may help you to overcome. In severe cases, you may need a nebulizer or emergency hospitalization.

Medication

In order to relieve yourself from pain and fever, you need to take analgesics such as acetaminophen. To reduce histamines and antibody reactions, you need to take antihistamines, such as chlorpheniramine maleate, and to prevent antibodies you may take anti-inflammatory, immuno-suppressive such as, prednisolone, but with physician’s prescription only and dosage as adviced by the doctor. Thus, once exposed to allergens, you may get expert treatment and get well soon.

Precautions

What are the precautions we can take?

Here is a brief list of activities:

  • Prune the acacia tree completely, leaving the tip portion, before the flowers open and start discharging pollen.
  • If the trees are not under your control, avoid the vicinity.
  • Use a veil or face-mask to avoid allergen getting inside.
  • If the pollen is from grass or herb, harvest it before flowering and use as fodder or compost.
  • Persons already having asthma may have puffer in their hand, take 2-3 puffs to get relief.
  • Dry ginger chewing is helpful to overcome breathlessness.

Our physician always tells us not to worry but stay brave enough to be healthy with minimum medication. He always reminds us of the importance of physical exercise as a daily routine, which makes you resistant. He also advises taking natural foods as much as we can, avoiding fried items and junk foods to have better immunity.

Final words

Allergens of other sorts also cause you debility due to reactions. Repeated exposure will totally make you physically and psychologically weak as well as lead you to economic loss. It is wise to you lose your morning walk instead of losing your health due to the exposure to allergens. So, the best remedy is to avoid these allergens and stay healthy.

That is true, Ms Eurofile, mostly the exams are during the seasonal transition and the tree flowering also is marking seasonal transition, right?

In the UK many people struggle with pollen in the hayfever season. Those who suffer the worst find it quite debilitating. Unfortunately the pollen season coincides with the exam season as well.
