Dieting? - Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

Updated on July 15, 2014

What is Your Body Fat Number?

our Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a measurement that gives an easy and inexpensive indication of possible weight problems.

A BMI calculation is easy to do and there is absolutely no cost. A BMI measurement can be done on adults and children.

With few exceptions (.i.e. bodybuilders) your BMI is something that can give you a fairly accurate number of how much of your body is composed of fat.

Calculating BMI

An easy formula.

English BMI Formula

BMI = ( Weight in Pounds / ( Height in inches x Height in inches ) ) x 703

Metric BMI Formula

BMI = ( Weight in Kilograms / ( Height in Meters x Height in Meters ) )

Thanks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the Body Mass Calculator

What Your BMI Numbers Mean

Your BMI is not a perfect evaluation of your weight but it will give you a fairly accurate assessment of how much of your body is fat.

There are charts to help you determine an appropriate reading of the BMI numbers.

A body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 is the normal weight range according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

What Your BMI Indicates

BMI Weight Status

Below 18.5 Underweight

18.5 - 24.9 Normal

25.0 - 29.9 Overweight

30.0 and Above Obese

per CDC @

Take Note.......

Your BMI results are only one factor indicating a potential health risk from being overweight. Although fairly accurate, only your doctor can interpret the results in your individual case. This test is an easy indicator that there may be a reason to look further into losing some weight.

BMI Facts

  1. Having the same BMI, women tend to have more body fat than men.
  2. Highly trained athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity instead of large amounts of fat.
  3. BMI is only a screening tool used to identify possible weight problems for adults.

      I am now reducing portions I eat. We eat healthy but we just have to reduce what we eat.
