Is Getting A Colon Cleanse For Weight Loss Beneficial?

Updated on March 7, 2009

Many people today are turning to holistic medicine for their weight loss needs. If you've ever thought about doing a colon cleanse for weight loss but weren't really sure if it could be beneficial, I might be able to shed some light on that :)

Many doctors have recognized the benefits that come from cleansing your stomach for the purpose of losing weight, but if you're wondering what the link between colon cleansing and weight loss is, we will have to start by looking at what the causes for obesity is!

Did you know that about 97 million people in the U.S are overweight or obese? Obesity is becoming a pretty big problem if you ask me.

The Causes Of Obesity

It is a common misconception that obesity is due to over-eating, and by that I mean that if you overeat anything then you will get fat. That just isn't true!

There is a world of difference between overeating pizzas and hamburgers and fruits and vegetables.

If you go on a diet that is 100% fruits, vegetables, nuts & seeds for a few months you will see what I am talking about.

You can eat all the food you want on this diet and still lose weight! If on the other hand you overeat junkfoods, well, we all know what happens then :).

Our busy lives aren't very good for our health. I know I feel rushed sometimes and just pick up a pizza or a quick snack somewhere that isn't healthy

It's hard to eat healthy when a hamburger that fills you up is cheaper than a fruit salad which only wets your appetite.

This isn't sustainable in the long run though. Our colons become a breeding ground for parasites, bacteria and other diseases.

Where Does Colon Cleansing Come Into The Picture?

These foods will eventually start to burden our body to the point where digestion and normal functions of the stomach start to degrade.

When we get unhealthy food our colon gets clogged by the toxins from our food. This is where the parasites, bacteria and fungus come in. They prevent proper absorption of nutrients and normal disposal of waste in the stomach.

Colon cleansing can help, here are three quick examples:

1. Cleaning the colon can remove the toxins and old fecal matter from your colon and will improve your stomach. It is kind of like cleaning out a car engine, after many years of use it is clogged, but when you clean it well, it starts to run smooth and look good again.

2. Colon cleansing helps in removing harmful parasites, bacteria and fungus which are responsible for ailments such as flatulence, bloating and constipation.

3. Because you've cleaned your engine, it will run better and you will have more fuel efficiency to drive longer distances. Translation: You will have more energy to exercise! :)

Is Colon Cleansing Safe?

There are three methods of colon cleansing.

1. Hydrotherapy
A professional therapist at a nice clinic introduces gentle streams of water into your colon to dissolve old fecal matter and this water is then taken out the same way. This is done in waves so fecal matter and toxins come out more easily.

2. Herbal Products
You can also buy herbal cleansing products which have laxative properties.

3. Diet
Your diet is the most important thing. It is the foundation of the house. If you have a bad diet then none of these methods will help you. Eat healthy and feel good! Focus on lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole-grain products and a lot of water.

So is a colon cleanse for weight loss safe? I would say yes, especially diet and good herbal products, because they use natural ingredients!

Enemas, hydrotherapy and irrigation is considered safe by people who have tried it, some doctors disagree but who can argue with all the people who have had great results with it?

Stay Healthy! :)

Hehe, you're right. I'm kind of in a colon health phase right now so I'm sharing what I am learning, I've found that it's always nice to write articles on what you've learned, I remember stuff better then.

Oh yeah, finnish and swedish eating habits are becoming the same as americans(I live in both countries).

I myself find it extremely hard to eat healthy when I am traveling for example, especially at airports where everything is extremely expensive (except the junkfood!).

Although if you can find a supermarket somewhere (not usually near an airport) you're golden :)

      Thanks for your comment JamaGenee!

Welcome to Hubpages!  What an unusual subject for your first hub.  Very informative, tho.  For a Finn, you seem to know a lot about American eating habits.  Sadly it's true, an unhealthy hamburger IS cheaper here than a salad.  Even those who do eat salads will drown them with high-calorie dressings, which negates the potential cleansing benefit.  I've never considered having my "engine" flushed out, but over time, I guess it *would* it, just like the engine in my car.  Thanks!
