Do Scents Make Sense? Part 3

Updated on October 16, 2013

Beautiful Hair = Beautiful Me

Think about these two words: BEAUTY SHOP. This is a place you go . . . to become beautiful. Yet every product in the shop is highly scented.

Don't people with fragrance sensitivity want to be beautiful? Don't they deserve to be as beautiful as everyone else? Of course we do! But somehow, for years and years, marketers of beauty products didn't get it.

Thankfully, that's beginning to change. There are unscented shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, gels, and finally, mousse. I'm here to show you where to find these products.

Fragrance-Free Shampoo

farmer jim says: "I was looking for a shampoo that didn't have a smell. My wife has morning sickness and most fragrances would make her ru for the toilet. This product did not make her sick and now she can enjoy washing her hair."

One happy mom writes: "This is the only product we have found that keeps our daughter's sensitive skin and eczema happy. We have nearly everything from this line of products. Although this is not a tear-free formula, we haven't had any problems with that and have been using it since she turned 1. I highly recommend this if you have problems with sensitivity, eczema, or chemical allergies!"

TechDiva says: "I am one of those people who have allergies to many things including fragrance and chemicals. I can't remember the last time I've stepped out of the shower without hives all over my neck, chest and shoulders. Maybe 10 years ? This shampoo is such a relief. It is gentle, not watery in my opinion and actually got my hair squeaky clean. I have medium length curly \ wavy fine hair. My hair lathered fine and in fact I found that just leaving it there for a minute or so after scrubbing, it seemed to be foaming up. I love it and would recommend it to anyone needing a break from the chemicals."

"This is the best shampoo for me. Can't tolerate shampoos with perfume in them and it was impossible to find shampoo free in any of the stores I go to. So decided to try the iternet and your ad showed up first. Thanks. It's great!"

Fragrance Free Conditioner

DHS Conditioning Rinse (8 oz)
DHS Conditioning Rinse (8 oz)

"I have a lot of allergies and cannot use fragranced products. This does have a slight citrus scent, which is very subtle, but nice. You MUST leave the conditioner in your hair for a few minutes to have it work. I used to slather it on and rinse it off, but would have a ton of tangles in my fine hair. Now I put it in, twist it up on top of my head, wash, and then rinse it out. Works great and no one knows it is a basic (not professional) conditioner. I will continue to purchase this product and recommend it to anyone with sensitivities."

A. Starnes says: "I have tried a ton of fragrance free shampoos and conditioners looking for a decent one. DHS, Free and Clear, Magik Botanicals, Paula's Choice, Earth Science etc. . .

While it is not everything I would like in a Conditioner, its the best fragrance free one I have found so far. Leaves my hair less dry, crackelly, and frizzy than most fragrance free conditioners. 4.5 stars."

JASON Fragrance Free Conditioner, 16 Ounce

This user raves: "I was exposed to toxic chemicals in 2006 and since then I cant breath when fragarance or dye is in the products. i have search for yrs to find this type of product and Jason's shampoo and conditioner and only use this now. It is the greatest chemical free product on market that I have found. I dont have any scents of any kind in my home. No candles, fragarences, air freshners, etc allowed. Anyone who has multiple chemical sensitivity sydrome from exposure to toxic chemicals where it should have not been and by the time your exposed it is to late....damage is done permanently and non-reversible. But at least we have Jason to help...."

AT LAST!!! Fragrance Free Mousse!!! - I have searched for this product for years!!!

I have asked beauticians, beauty supply places, friends - and none of them had ever heard of a fragrance-free mousse. I was frustrated. I believe that every person should have access to products that make them look and feel attractive!

Imagine my delight, when for the zillionth time, I did a search for "unscented mousse" and Amazon came up with this product! Excitedly, I read review after review praising its great styling properties and its complete lack of fragrance. I had to try it for myself before I could recommend it here.

The reviewers were right! You can't smell a thing, but this mousse definitely does exactly what a mousse should do - add lift, body, and oomph! to my lank locks! I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Ok, so far, so good . . . - Now I need some unscented skin care. Can you help me?

I'd be happy to help you! Click here for fragrance free skin care products in Do Scents Make Sense? Part 4.

Were I not using the no-poo method, I know I would be looking at these products to see if some of them might work for my hair. So many of the scented products make me physically ill, which I know you understand, so I am grateful that you compile such lists for others who are still looking for solutions. You are providing a much needed service. Thank you.
