Save a Life - Donate Blood

Updated on August 30, 2015

A Special Thanks to My Husband: 37+ Gallons of Whole Blood Donated and Counting

My husband Paul, who I have been married to for 52 years, has been an enormous advocate to donate blood and save lives. He has been donating blood for 51 years. He has made 300 donations which equals 37+ gallons of whole blood.

I believe that his commitment to such a noble cause and this great milestone deserves a special thanks.

It all started in 1964, when a friend of ours visited us in our apartment, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He asked Paul to come with him the following weekend to donate blood. Paul wasn't too happy as he doesn't like needles, but he went anyway and donated. The rest is history.

He went every 56 days and made a commitment that he would donate blood regularly. When we emigrated from South Africa to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1992 Paul had to wait 3 years before donating blood again. Even though we did not live in an area in South Africa that had Malaria, the United States Health Department did not allow him to donate blood for this period. Except for this gap he has been donating regularly every 56 days unless he had a cold or some other ailment. He has been encouraging everyone to Donate Blood - Save a Life!

I donated once and then I got an illness that prevented me from ever donating again. As a blood cancer survivor I never needed a blood transfusion but I'm so grateful that your husband donated blood that could have saved me and saved others like me. Thank you so much to you both.

35 gallons, that is really a lot, I have donated 8 times. That is about 0.7 gallons. To reach 35 gallon, I will need to donate for another 370 time. That is really a lot

I would have liked to donate blood, but I have Von willebrands, which is factor 8 missing in my blood, so no one really wants my blood.

Never mind I was born like that, and have learnt to live with it. Great lens.
