Why Starving Yourself To Lose Weight Is A Bad Idea

Updated on January 18, 2011

The Dangers Of Fasting

Many people think that one of the easiest way to lose weight is to simple not eat. This is a terrible idea not only because it doesn’t work but also because it can lead to some very serious health problems. The belief is that if you stop putting calories into your body then the weight will just melt off. I guess this sounds justified but in reality it just is not the truth

So why wont you lose weight if you just stop eating? Well here is the reason.

If you could lose weight simply by not eating then why would there be such a huge market for diet pills and weight loss programs? Starving yourself and then gaining the weight back in a few days creates a cycle that is not only very harmful to your body but it makes it harder to achieve your weight loss goals. If you start to fast for a day, you will probably begin losing weight pretty fast. Unfortunately, 95% of the weight that you lose will be comprised of water weight as your body absorbs the fluids to try to replenish itself. Water weight will fall off very quickly but it will also return just as fast when you start to eat again.

Starvation Mode

Not eating will cause your body to automatically go into what is known as starvation mode. Your body realizes it is not getting enough nourishment so it begins storing fat to be consumed later. So as you are not eating to lose weight your body is actually retaining more fat cells. To produce energy, your body will first begin to burn muscle protein. Only when this muscle protein can longer be burned will your body start to burn fat and by then you will have some very serous health problems.

Decrease Metabolism

While your body is in starvation mode, your body will begin to conserve energy. This will make you feel tired and sluggish during the day. After you begin to eat again this low metabolism rate will burn calories at a much slower rate and make it harder for your body keep the pounds off.

Health Problems

As I mentioned, starving yourself is dangerous and can lead to many health problems. You will be tired and weak due to lack of energy. Your body will begin to eat away at muscle tissue since it doesn’t have enough nourishment. Without energy you will not be as active and there for you will not be burning fat and calories. Vitamins and nutrients are important for your body every day. Without eating you will not be getting enough of the important nutrients your body needs.

So what is the best way to lose weight?

Clinical studies have proven time and time again that the best way to lose weight is to follow a healthy, regular diet plan. A healthy diet consists of no less than 1200 calories per day. Adding to that a good exercise routine that you perform three or four times a week will help you to lose weight and keep it off permanently. Being healthy is a lifestyle and takes commitment but the rewards are that you will look better, feel better, and have more energy in your life.

Be smart and don’t do anything that may endanger your health, you are trying to lose weight because you want to be more healthy. Not trying to make yourself sick. I love how you wrote fasting in dangerous but a lot of doctors have actually said that a water fast is a healthy way to detox. It's also have some benefits. Are you saying you are more knowledgeable than a doctor?

Please.. i bet you are a personal trainer who gets paid $100 an hour to train ppl. when you are getting paid by fat people wanting to lose weight. it would be our goal to make them lose weight slowly. that way... more money in your pocket because they would be your client for longer.

Starving yourself is unhealthy yes. However in my situation. I am 100lbs overweight. I am female 5ft2 and weigh 220lbs. A female my height should be around 100-110lbs. I basically need to lose half my weight.

I have a condition where i have to take medication and it made me gain weight. I have tried eating healthy. At one stage. All i ate was strawberries, oats for breakfast and a lean meat for dinner and i still gained weight.

Which one do you think is healthier? to starve yourself or be 100lb overweight? I think being that overweight is much bigger of a problem than starving yourself.

The reason why there is so many pills and diets is because Most people simply do not have the Willpower to not eat. Ohh how easy is it to take diet pills and eat all you want? Not eating takes a lot of willpower. Going to sleep while your stomach is making noises cos it's hungry takes willpower. Most people cannot ignore the Hunger pains.

I've been on a diet where i eat only 500 calories a day. I eat every 2 hours and consume aprox 50 calories every 2 hours. In 3 weeks i have lost 20lbs and dropped 1 dress size! As a reward for myself I decided to let myself have a whole weekend of eating normal food. AKA (non vegetables) I ate chicken and bread on friday, sat and sunday and guess what? I managed to lose another 4lbs that week. So The whole... If you starve yourself and you start eating. You will gain it back as soon as you start eating theory is not true! if it is.. then why didn't i gain weight when i started eating normally? Instead i ended up eating chicken and bread for 3 whole days and still manage to lose weight!

I also have a lot more energy! In the first week.. yes i felt weak.. But on the 2nd week. Your body adjusts to it. On the 2nd week i felt so energetic that i ended up going on a hike! went hiking for 4 hours and i wasn't that tired! Usually i used to get tired! I feel like i am more energetic. If you actually interviewed and talk to people who are on diets that starve the body. You would know this fact.

I am not condoning starving yourself. I know starving yourself is not healthy. I would not recommend starving yourself to someone who just wants to lose 10-20lbs. They are better off with a trainer..

However if you are Obese like me and need to lose half your own body weight.. losing 100lbs for me. Then yes. Starving yourself would be a good method. The way i see it is.. hey u want me to stay 100lbs overweight and be unhealthy or lose 100lbs and be unhealthy anyway? might as well be skinny and unhealthy than be Obsesed and unhealthy.
