How to Clean Your Doulton Water Filter Ceramic Cartridge

Updated on April 5, 2013

My Doulton Water Purifier Set-up

All the water consumed in my home first flows through this efficient water filtration system.

It is effortless to use, and as much as part of my daily life as is the refrigerator.

For months at a time I simply use it, without a thought to cleaning, knowing that it will automatically let me know when it's time to do the job.

This lens presents a step-by-step example of how to open the unit, remove the cartridge, clean it, and get it back in use, all in a flash.

That is how I do it. Then view the video demonstration to see how fast you can do it too.

Get a Grip & Unscrew the Unit

For me, it's easiest to hug the unit. First, I need to unhook the flexible tubing that I have hung from the metal dishrack rail, that is suspended from the sink.

I wear those pink rubber gloves, so my hands don't slip. I make sure the counter area is clear of the pitcher and other items so I don't knock them over.

Then I grip it close to my body, to get a good hold, anchoring the filtration unit between left arm and ribs. Following the old mantra: "lefty loosie, righty tightie", my muscles spring to use, loosening and unscrewing the unit.

Now The Cover Is Loose

The unit will look this way when it is successfully unscrewed. Be certain to maintain a firm hold on the two parts. If the bottom, which is heavier, falls it may damage the cartridge inside.

The Doulton Water Filter Unit Unscrewed

Now that the unit is open it's easy to see what's inside. The new white porous ceramic cartridge has turned very dark amber. This is an example of how the cartridge works. It filters out particles that collect on the surface.

The Ceramic Cartridge Removed for Cleaning

Turn the base upside down, cradled in the left arm, and gently unscrew the cartridge. Lift it out, and lay it on a soft cloth, and set the top aside. With proper care the cartridge can last for years. I've had mine for six years now.

A Clean Scrubbed Strip on the Cartridge

Using a long handled soft bristle vegetable brush, gently scrub the cartridge, taking care not to let the plastic parts of the scrub brush contact the ceramic. Brush under running warm water.

The Type of Brush I Use For Cleaning

It's just that I am frugal to the core that makes me use this soft brush to clean the cartridge. With proper washing, my cartridge is still filtering strong, after 8 years.

I like the long handle because it prevents me from damaging the filter cartridge when I scrub it, by putting too much pressure on the ceramic.

Filter Is Fresh & Clean Now

Now that the filter is washed and brushed, and thoroughly rinsed, it is ready for reinstallation. I like to clean my filter at least every couple months.

Get The Air Out of the Filter

I love this stage. Turn the Doulton Water Filter upside down in the sink. Turn the valve to the horizontal position, and turn the cold water on low. If you turn the water too high before you are accustomed to this process, you may find you have a water fountain on your hands - and might as well get your swimsuit on.

As the water burbles in bits out of the upside-down spout, watch and listen until all sounds and traces of air bubbles in the line vanish. You will know this stage is complete when all you hear and see is a steady stream of water.

Turn off the faucet. Turn the valve to the vertical position, and turn the unit upright on the counter. Wipe it clean and dry with a clean cloth, and fill your pitcher.

Note The Readout On The Top

Two modes at the top of the unit show how much usage-time is left on the cartridge before it needs to be replaced. Since my unit is six years old, and the Filter Life mode shows "50" there may be another six years to go before it is no longer effective.

The Flow Rate mode shows gallons/minute flowing through the filter. Switch between modes by pressing the blue button. Now the filter is back in action for a couple more months.

It feels good to use natural materials like this porous ceramic candle, to filter the nasties out of our home water.

Clean Your Doulton Cartridge in an Instant

If you're not striving to keep your cartridge for six years, go ahead and use a Scotch Brite type pad. You can see the job is done in a flash. Well worth the convenience. Use the Scotch Brite pads, below.

Huge Capacity Countertop Unit

This is the portable unit I plan to get for the workroom where I want to coach persons who are living with the effects of TBI to make art.

I like the five stage mineral filter cartridge that cleans water for a whole family. This unit is portable, so it can go to the party room when celebrations are on.

This is the filter cartridge for the Huge Capacity unit above. Each layer of mineral removes its own batch of particulate from the water we take from our taps.

Stainless Steel Countertop Filter

I'm always drawn to good design, so that's why I selected this gorgeous guy. It's sleek and bright and uses fine technology.

If you've got a thing for stainless steel, this may be the system for you. I especially value the fact that the unit can be converted to an under counter system.

Do you have a home water filtration system like mine? or do you use a countertop pitcher or another brand of filtration unit?
