What is Energy Medicine?

Some complementary and alternative medicine practitioners believe there is an invisible energy force flows through your body. When this energy flow is blocked or unbalanced this leads to sickness, illness and disease. Different traditions call this energy by different names, such as "chi," "ki" "prana" and "life force."

Practitioners of energy medicine using energy therapies work to unblock the flow of the energy or to re-balance the energy force. Energy therapies include modalities such as qi gong, therapeutic touch, reiki and magnet therapy.

There are believers and skeptics of Energy Medicine, legitimate and not so legitimate practitioners or energy healing therapies. For this page, I've reviewed Energy Medicine as defined as a CAM (Complementary and Alternative) treatment by the NCCAM (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) along with some examples of how it is being currently used.

What is Energy Medicine?

The Mayo Clinic Staff provides the following definition of Energy Medicine in a review article on Complementary and Alternative Medicine:

  • ...an invisible energy force flows through your body, and when this energy flow is blocked or unbalanced you can become sick.
  • Different traditions call this energy by different names, such as chi, prana and life force.
  • The goal of these therapies is to unblock or re-balance your energy force.
The preface introducing the definition with what seems to almost be a disclaimer stating "some complementary and alternative medicine practitioners believe...."

Energy Medicine is an Evolving Field

The science of the field of Energy Medicine is still evolving. We have devices and technology that can measure the electrical activity of the heart using an electrocardiogram or ECG or EKG, the electrical activity of the brain using an electroencephalogram EEG and the electrical activity of the muscles using an electromyogram EMG. An MRI or magnetic resonance imagery uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to create an image of bones, organs and structures inside the body. These are all ways of testing different energy measurements in the body that have been developed in the past century. MRI's were developed in the 1970s.

There are skeptics of energy medicine. In a recent study of rheumatologists in the United States to find out what they think of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) researchers reported that only 10% of those surveyed would consider recommending an energy medicine modality like Reiki to a patient.

While I might have been more skeptical of Energy Medicine when I was younger, now I prefer thinking that science has not evolved to the point of having the technology to measure these energy fields yet. With energy medicine science is where we were before EKG's, EEG's and MRI's were developed.

I have the advantage of having been at a place waiting for the science to catch up to explain a field of study before. When in graduate school and medical school I studied the field of Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), the connections between the mind, the body and the immune system, before the science was available to measure immunologic and hormonal changes. Now PNI is a recognized field of research and study.

Different Names for Energy

The energy or the life force that one feels and can sense has been recognized and given different names by different cultures.

  • Qi or Chi - Chinese
  • Ki - Japanese
  • Prana - Hindus
  • Spirit - Judeo-Christian

Energy Fields in Health

Energy Medicine is one of the Complementary and Alternative modalities that involve manipulation of various energy fields to affect health. These different fields may be veritable or measurable (as with measuring EKG's, ECG's and MRI's) or fields yet to be measured as with therapeutic touch, Reiki and the effects of light, sound and music therapies.

Different Types of Energy Medicine Therapies

Energy Medicine has been divided into two main categories, those therapies using biofields and those using bioelectromagnetic fields, those using pulsed or magnetic fields. Some include music and sound therapies under the category of energy medicine.

1. Biofield therapies

  • Qi gong
  • Therapeutic Touch
  • Reiki

2. Bioelectromagnetic-based therapies

  • Magnetic fields

Connecting to the Earth Life Force Energy

During an interview with Sounds True Publisher Tami Simon in the video clip below, Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson they mention two helpful visuals to understand how the life force energy works.

The first from publisher Tami Simon where she shares her thoughts on life force energy. She thinks of the process as though we are trees and are fed by a root system. This root system allows us to access the energy from the earth and plug into a greater life force that flows around us.

Dr. Chiasson offers an even better visual think of our interconnectedness with each other and with this life force energy. She thinks of us as being like a mushroom.

What we see when we see a mushroom (picture) is just a small part of the mushroom or the fruiting body of a fungus. The fungus exists as a system of multiple roots just under the surface of the soil. It reaches out under the surface connecting to more mushrooms and accessing the energy from the earth.

It "putting our roots down" to connect to or tapping into the larger unified energy that helps to give us energy and also helps us to feel grounded and connected.

What is Energy Healing?

The following more formal definition of "Energy healing therapy" comes from a report published by the National Center for Health Statistics National Health Statistics Report No. 12, "Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use Among Adults and Children: United States, 2007."

  • Energy healing therapy involves the channeling of healing energy through the hands of a practitioner into the client's body to restore a normal energy balance and, therefore, health.
  • Energy healing therapy has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments and health problems, and is often used in conjunction with other alternative and conventional medical treatments.

For a 2007 NHIS (National Health Interview Survey) survey researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defined energy healing as:

  • Energy healing is the channeling of healing energy through the hands of a practitioner into the client's body.

Self-Healing with Energy Medicine

Self-Healing with Energy Medicine is my favorite CD's on Energy Medicine. I picked it up after our residential week last fall for the Integrative Medicine Fellowship program. It is a program that I have continued to use since.

Self-Healing with Energy Medicine

Self-Healing with Energy Medicine (The Self-healing Series)
Self-Healing with Energy Medicine (The Self-healing Series)

In this two part audiobook, listeners learn about the basics of self-healing with Energy Medicine.

In Session One Dr. Andrew Weil looks at Energy Medicine as an ancient alternative for self healing. He shares the current state of scientific investigation as well as some of his own experiences using energy for healing.

In Session Two Dr. Anne Marie Chiasson shares her insights in using energy medicine to create a more harmonized energy system and to restore the body's natural energy flow. She takes listeners through a series of guided exercises for self-healing that include Toe Tapping, Sacred touch and Heart-centered meditation.

These practices can be easily added to enhance and promote one's daily wellness.

Using Energy Healing

Maintaining Health with Energy Healing Practices

Energy healing has been described by Dr. Anne Marie Chiasson as "the ancient art of healing through touch, breath, movement and sound."

The energy that we feel is connected to a larger field of energy, the unifield of the earth. In her teaching on Energy Healing, Dr. Chiasson offers this advice about energy:

  • A regular energy-healing practice becomes increasingly important, especially as we grow older and must look to energy sources outside the body to maintain our health.

One of the ways to look for energy sources to maintain health is through practices such as energy healing which help us to connect to the greater life force on earth. According to Dr. Chiasson it is when we get disconnected from the larger field that we get tired and reconnecting to the energy gets us energized.

Some of the ways to connecting to the life force in the earth or energy of the earth and re-energizing are through activities such as movement, walking, exercise and special practices like energy healing.

I ordered the Energy Healing book after listening to Dr. Chiasson's Grand Rounds Presentation for the Center for Integrative Medicine on "The Ceremony of Medicine."

After watching the lecture, I was interested in learning more about her healing practices.

I was fortunate to learn more about Energy Medicine from her as part of the Integrative Medicine Fellowship program.
