Premade First Menstrual Period Kits for Girls

Teaching young girls what to expect about their periods, especially their first period can be made easier with helpful first period kits.

The My First Period Kit & DVD developed by pediatrician Dr. Chrystal de Freitas and The Dot Girl First Period Kit created by two sisters, Terri Goodwin and Kathy Pickus as a way to help parents honestly address what is often an uncomfortable topic.

The Coming of Age Menarche Kit is another option that helps parents prepare a young girl for her first period, but also offers suggestions for creating coming of age party or a "meaningful celebration of her menarche rite of passage."

For parents, tweens and teens interested in more eco-friendly menstrual options, I have included several reusable menstrual pads choices as well as links to other green resources.

Note to Parents:

Before letting your tween view any video or read any book or information, you will want to take a look at the information yourself, so you know what is being presented and decide it the information is appropriate for your child to read / view.

23.4 % of African American girls

14.9 % of Hispanic girls.

Girls are Beginning Puberty at a Younger Age

In a 2010 study researchers reported a higher proportion of girls were developing breasts earlier at age 7 and 8 than those found in studies done 10 and 30 years ago. In addition:

  • 10.4 percent of white non-Hispanic girls had begun puberty at age 7, measured by breast development, compared to 23.4 percent of black girls and 14.9 percent of Hispanic girls.
  • Among 8-year-olds, puberty had begun in 18.3 percent of white non-Hispanic girls, 42.9 percent of black girls and 30.9 percent of Hispanic girls.
Causes of early puberty are thought to be a combination of genetics, environment and other factors such as weight and nutrition.

I didn't know they made such kits. My daughter is only 6, so I guess I have a few years before I need to worry about this, but it's good to know what's out there.
