This beautiful flower of African origin was first introduced into Jamaica and from there to Mexico during the colonial era. Gaining popularity for its great taste and medicinal properties, its use spread to Central America, and the Caribbean. known also as the Jamaican Rose, this decorative flower is now widely used for health and pleasure. The drink, which is made from the actual dried flowers (blossoms) of the hibiscus plant, provides a delicious, mild tasting beverage of a rich red color, that may served as a hot tea or cold.

A leader in home remedies, the Jamaica (Hibiscus) flower has become very popular. Reported claims of healing and health benefits include:

Traditional Recipe

“Agua de Jamaica” (Jamaica Water)


3.5 oz Package of Flor de Jamaica (Jamaica Blossoms)

Makes 1 ¼ gal


Place 3 cups Flor de Jamaica Blossoms in cooking pot

Add ½ gal of water

Cover and bring to a boil

Simmer covered for 15 minutes

Remove from heat and let stand for 20 minutes

Drain and toss blossoms, and separate from syrup

Combine 2 cups concentrated liquid with ¼ gal of water

Sweeten to taste

Keep refrigerated

      My interest in "Flor de Jamaica" started when a friend recommended it for a urinary tract infection. I started drinking it and to my surprise, it not only cleared the infection..I lost weight as well!
