Does anyone have any advice for adjusting to life with diabetes?
I've known several adults diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Some have managed, even after being initially placed on insulin or medication, to control their condition through diet alone; after they've been diagnosed and prescribed insulin or medication. The Diabetic diet leads to weight loss, and increasing physical activity can help as well. So, my first advice would be to faithfully stick to the diet and increase exercise, because there may be a chance to eliminate the need for insulin and/or medication.
I've also known people who weren't able to do the above, and who eventually had any number of the resulting medical conditions. This is why the above advice is as important as it is (even if insulin and or medication cannot be eliminated after initially using them to control the condition).
I agree with Lisa HW. My mother has diabetes and doesn't exercise like she's suppose to. I have to stay on her about that because she has an enlarged heart, and high blood pressure. If you feel like you don't have energy to do anything, just take a walk around the block or to a block, anything is better than nothing. I would also keep something like a sugar free piece of candy or some orange juice close at hand in case your blood sugar drops suddenly. But also stick to the diet your doctor has given you make sure all medication prescribed does not make you worse. I hope that helps a little.
Find a local diabetes support group. making friends with the same condition is the best medicine! (ask your local hospital,doctor,nurse or dietician) Surf the web for support groups.Get knowledgable about the disease-check out these web sites: www.nccdp.org wwwmedscape.com www.aarpmagazine.org www.pbs.org to name a few. The National Diabetes Foundation is a wonderful place to start!

I agree with the above. Lifestyle changes are the things you need to look at. If you are a smoker, give it up. If you drink, drink in moderation. Eat healthy and exercise. This advice probably should also be applied to people that don't have diabetes too
Accept as much support as you can. Even if you don't think you need it now, you will. Diabetes is a horrible disease in that it's hidden and can make you feel extremely down in a variety of ways. Coping with the emotional side of diabetes is often put second to coping well with the physical symptoms, but it's equally important.
More people have diabetes than you realise. Even animals get diabetes which is something my dog has.
Diabetes 2 is especially about what you eat. For starters if you are a little on the heavy side then shedding a few pounds is a great start. With diet you need to count your carbs and make sure you don't overload on them. Foods such as bread, rice etc are very high in carbs and will make your blood glucose rise sharply. Vegetables and proteins make your glucose rise slowly and do not give as higher reading as other foods. Drink plenty of water because thats always great for your body. Avoid strenous exercising when its hot...because it will change your levels to very high or very low. start off slowly with the exercise and increase a little each time. talk with your family and friends so that they know what its all about and therefor will not put temptations in your way. It can be managed nicely if your willing to follow a few simple rules. Good luck
i am type one and have been for 2 years and its not a big thing as long as you look after yourself the bottom line is stay active and just watch what you drink and eat, aviod high carbs and start eating lots of veg and fruit and vit tablets,
always testing if your a type one diabetic so you dont ever suffer form someting called keytones which affects the body and dont forget ti get bloods checked and keep a eye on your weight.

Adjusting to life with diabetes can be difficult at first, especially since a lot of strong emotions comeinto play when you are diagnosed. Fear,anger and depression are often felt after being diagnosed.
The most important thing to do is understand that although you now must change a lot about your lifestyle you can live a long and normal life through dedication and hard work. With proper attention you can even eat the foods you love by making allowances for them.
No food is forbidden but many must be limited.
