She's just a little girl
You know, it's hard for me to write this, I hate tear jerkers, but I feel compelled. I know a little girl with stage four brain cancer. She's just a little girl. She's the same age as my daughter. She's my niece, AND SHE'S JUST A LITTLE GIRL DAMN IT. Why?!... I don't know, I don't think anyone does. But it's the only thing I can think to ask. Why? Why is this little girl made to suffer, why is her family made to grieve and why can't someone do something? Well, everything that can be done is being done. There's nothing that can be done beyond what the doctors and her family are already doing. To me, up untill now, she was just another face in the crowd of children that assembled at the family functions. Just another one of the kids running around, just another one of the kids getting under foot, just another one of the kids 'at play'. Just another face. Then some horrible thoughts occur to me, the questions that I hate to ask myself. What if the next family function arrives and she's not there? What if the next family function arrives to find her missing and what if the next family function arrives and I don't see her face. She's just a little girl you know. She's just a little girl...

Cancer's only criteria is for us to be human. No one is immune to the disease. We have either experienced it personally or have held hands with family, friends or acquaintances as they suffered through it.
We can join any conversation about Cancer and share what we know. This disease has united us on all levels of life. It is not prejudice or fussy when attaching itself to another life, family or community.
The Women Abreast are part of the paddling community. They are a dynamic group of women who are making up dragon boat teams, one boat at a time. When they attend the festival races, they come in numbers. The festivals are great at hosting an event for the different Women Abreast teams to compete in together. The women are competitive and anxious to show off their skills.
When the teams gather to line-up, a hush always falls over the spectators. For on the water, we are not viewing the latest breast cancer numeric stats, we're connecting with the living community of survivors. The numbers are staggering.
The only criteria to being on a Women Abreast team, is to have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
