Your worst dental experience?

    I was reading another thread about Frogdropping had gone to the dentist and it's too old to respond.

    The worst thing for me was when I needed oral surgery to remove a tooth which was broken below the gums.
    anyways the whole procedure took only 15 mins, the bad bad part was them telling me "you could die, sign this giving your permission" something like that. shit. that was bad.

      just waiting in line at the dentists office is scary for me, I can manage when they are extracting it, I just close my eyes. I prefer giving birth than having a toothache though.

    Well, a dentist once left a small remainder of tooth in my gum. It was very painful, and happened at the weekend. When I had it removed, I can't remember having signed anything in case I should die.
    I suppose they just wanted you to confirm that you knew of the risks involved in the operation. I think most operations can be fatal.

      Sometimes, a part of the tooth root breaks during removal. Any dentist could miss it. It usually works it's way out.

      The biggest danger is that it could travel to the brain.
      Even plaque can travel to the brain and it's important to have your teeth cleaned before any are extracted.

    I did have a few others,
    one, I was at a dental school for -students....aaargh!

    They gave me a root canal......which took 3 visits of 3 hours each!!! mad

    During one of the visits, with a dental dam holding my mouth open for like 2hrs or so, making my mouth and throat totally dry, I felt like I was going to choke...

    One of the students was jamming xray things into my mouth and boy did it hurt!!

    I had had it, and I said to them: "You know I don't do c*** sucking for a living!!"
    I was sooooooooo pissed! lol
    I got a good laugh!!! lol

      And I've had all of this, too, Schoolgirl. You're not alone. It's as uncomfortable for everyone.

      I never want it again, which is why I brush my teeth three times a day and always chew gum, and it works.

        Gum is good for the teeth, even though it has sugar.

        The gum picks up any sugar it leaves. It also picks up other things from the surface and between your teeth.

      Oh boy, SGFR, where and when did this horrorshow happen?  I may have been the assistant!  I worked at University of Alabama, Birmingham, dental school in the late 70's.  You weren't even born though, right? wink
      Anyway, you certainly brought back memories-rubber dams, etc.!
      I'll never forget one dental student I was assisting-he had never given an actual injection before, so I had to walk him through it (as all medical 'assistants' generally do!!).  The tooth in question was a front upper, so he had to give the shot above that.  (Gawd, I'm getting the creeps just writing this...)
      When he stuck the patient, her eyes shot out tears, and her nose was essentially flooding the clinic floor.  He'd managed to inject her sinus cavity. ;(
      I quit not long after that for a job as an orthodontic assistant, with an experienced dentist!!!

        hey if they hurt you.....well, I don't refrain...but that's just me...I suppose I'm better behaved now.....or am I?

        Either way it sux and finally I went to a normal dentist and it took 1 hr.

    The complications or risk for any medication or procedure is the possibility of death.  That's just to cover their butt. That way, if anything less horrific than death happens you'll still be happy because "at least you didn't die!".  I need some dental work...and I dread it.

    LOL......I hate it. I was holding out until Nov to see what our dental coverage at work would be for the new year.  November is our usual open enrollment period where you can sign up for coverage for the next calendar year.  They were delayed in getting us the info.  We just got it last week and it isn't worth the money I'd have to pay for it, so I waited for nothing.

    ...mine was a good experience....you'll probably find this weird...but....anyway used to go to a periodontist and of course had no coverage and i got tired of spending too much money on treatment...so ventured off to a university and had dentists specializing in periodontal work, work on me.  The prof was pretty cool...he knew i didn't like needles for pain or freezing...so he hypnotised me...it worked...did it for 3 treatments....it was definitely different....i just had my eyes closed; couldn't open them up and i recall hearing his soothing voice as the dentist in training did the work...........odd?....i went for it....i moved away, otherwise i would have continued going if that same prof was there....he was an interesting man.......

    I needed a root canal but I never had one done before. I was new to town so I hadnt found a dentist yet. I went to a big - and popular - clinic, thinking Id get a good dentist there.

    After filing the hole he drilled, the dude stuffed a wooden post in my tooth and sealed it up. I didnt know that wasnt right. It was a Thursday. I was supposed to go back in a week for it to get finished.

    By Saturday the tooth was of course infected. The dentist wouldnt return my calls. Finally I went to an emergency room - all they would do was give me demerol. My jaw was swelled to the size of a baseball.

    They referred me to a specialist first thing Monday morning. He took an x-ray and showed me the door. Literally wouldnt touch me. He even set the pen and paper I had to sign on the counter and stepped away, instead of handing it to me.

    Monday afternoon the original dentist finally called me back. I told him the specialist had referred me back to him to have the tooth pulled. When I got to the clinic, some other dentist pulled the tooth. I saw the guy who did it peek around the corner at me, then real quick he disappeared again.

    Frickin dentist quack!

    i had an overfilled root canal. it hurt until i had it dug out and redone. some of the filling material escaped to my gums and caused inflamation. i eventually lost the tooth, but not before infection in it spread and caused the two teeth next to it to be loose. it's in the front, so i have a hole in my smile. i want to get a bridge, but the neighboring teeth might not hold it. se la vie. appointment next month. que sera, sera.

      yeah. I have a missing tooth in the back and need 2 crowns on my  4th and 5th teeth from the front...which prop will be pulled...so it will be close to my smile

    lol you read it already. Having a wisdom tooth out, sans any pain relief and awake. Horrible.

      I know that feeling very well. I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled in one appointment. It was an army dentist who didn't believe me when I told him the Novocaine had not worked. In fact, he wasn't even looking when he administered it. He just jammed the needle in and turned to talk to his assistant. I told him I felt it shoot down the back of my throat when he administered it, and he told me I was wrong.

      On the first tooth, he had to break it into pieces to get it out. He used what looked like a pair of pliers to smash it. You had better believe we had words and a little bit of physical contact when he broke that tooth without the Novocaine.

      To top it off, he did nerve damage. 23 years later I still have no feeling in half of my tongue and lower lip.

      He was very lucky that he was a Lt Colonel and I was but a lowly private first class. Otherwise, the SOB would have come away from the experience hurting at least as badly as me.

    My worst experience was about 12 years ago.  It was the first time I'd been to this dentist, and I was there for a root canel.  He put me under, and when I woke up there was blood on my shirt and my belt was undone.  I have no idea what happened, but I hate dentists now though.

    Worst I had was many years ago at the dental hospital a treatment for gum diseases that involved cutting the gums open, scraping the exposed toots and then sewing the gums with stitches. It took ages and I had to have more than one of these treatments. Never again!

    LOL, My worst dental experience was moving in with a dental student I was dating... he would sit around at night flossing and picking at his teeth... YUK!  Some things are just better left unshared.  I moved out after about a month and we brokeup shortly thereafter.  This is why I tell my kids to brush, brush, brush and floss, floss, floss... in the bathroom.

    I had a dentist tell me I had 13 cavities. He said they were inside the teeth and couldn't be seen outwardly. He quoted me a couple thousand to fix them.
    The day of my first appointment I had to cancel.

    Later I went to another dentist and he said I didn't have even one cavity, and I had healthy teeth. I haven't had any cavities since.

    Dentist are dishonest too. Like with any doctor, you should get a second opinion.

    When I had 3 wisdom teeth out and the dentist had to put his knee on my chest to get a good grip on them teeth....I had a quick injection that numbed my gums and it began to wear off right on the 3rd tooth and I actually felt the scrape of the tooth as it was extracted and god was I swearing like a mad man!!!?
