it depends on what kind of help someone is in need of.
One needs to be cautious that he/she is actually helping someone. Sometimes in our altruistic efforts, we may do something for someone when they could have done it themselves. In that case the "help" is actually harmful.
Families of addicts are an excellent example of this. In their efforts to "help" a loved one, they often unwittingly enable the drug user to maintain the drug habit. CA (Codependents Anonymous) is an excellent program that in part teaches how enabling is not helping someone. Becoming codependent does not help oneself in any way.
This can be true if you are having problems in the area of your emotions and you are trying to help others.. you could only give what you have..unless you have taken the time to heal and let go. But if you have to share knowledge, the more you share the more it gets ingrained in you and you will never forget what you have learnt.
So the are not generic statements but situational.
This is a hard one. I have seen many people help benefit others only because it helps mask their own pain.
I know a woman that sleeps literally 15 hours a day, works for 8, and watches TV/eats a TV dinner and gets ready for bed that 1 extra hour.
She works in a group home...
I don't agree. Even a street beggar can help you - imagine getting hit while crossing the road.
I think your post possibly refers to two different things: people who help other people on activities they can't do themselves; and about the issue of putting your needs first above others'. So which one of the two is it?
The point is we can help others. And how much help we can give depends on our personal capacity and personal motivation to do so. And as much as we help others, we also need other people's help. As the saying goes, "You don't need to be a superman to make a difference."
There are few absolutes in life and I believe the general mesage of the adage " you cannot help others until you help yourself" infers that you will eventually run out of energy and strength if you give yourself away without retreat and replenishment. Feeding yourself can be spiritually, emotionally or physically... an empty bucket has little to give....yet it can carry much before it overflows....
Here is what the good old book called the Hub Bible have to say about this.Once you had a brother trying to help his sister read a well written Hubpage. Then the sister noticed that her brother was making no sense. Then HUBJesus said to the brother ,you must first take the stones out your eyes before trying to remove the dust from your sister's eyes. The blind can't lead the blind.Same goes for the helpless.I hope we all learned a valuable lesson here.PEACE!!
have you ever heard the saying that charity begins at home.
I believe that is a true statemant
