Worksheets for Glo Germ

Germ Lesson with just water:

Use a spray bottle filled with clean water. Spray water on children's hands. Explain that the water on their hands represents germs that come out of their mouths when they cough and sneeze. Now have the children touch an object (i.e. table, chair, etc.). Ask them what happened to the object they touched (it became damp). Explain that this is what happens when we sneeze into our hands and then touch an object (the germs on our hands get on the object). Discuss what might happen if one of their friends touches the object while it is moist (they might pick up the germs and get sick). Explain that if you wash your hands after sneezing or coughing in them the germs wi11 be washed away and there will be less of a chance for people to get sick.

Objective for lessons: Tell why cleanliness, grooming, posture, and body mechanics are important.

General Information:

ï Germs are everywhere.

ï Germs are so small that you can not see them.

ï Germs can make you sick.

ï You can get rid of germs by washing your hands.

How to Wash Your Hands:

ï Use warm, running water.

ï Use liquid or pump soap whenever possible.

ï Rub hands together for at least 15 seconds.

ï Scrub underneath the fingernails.

ï Rinse and then dry.

When to Wash Your Hands:

ï After using the toilet.

ï Before eating or touching food.

ï After playing with animals.

The Kindergarten lesson sheet can be used for many other ages. So, don't feel confined to use the lesson that matches with your classroom.

Miscellaneous Information:

ï Hand washing message needs to be reinforced several times throughout the day, especially before lunch and after using the restroom.

ï Teach by example.

ï The activity asks each student to write his/her name on the bottom of the page pledging to wash their hands. You may want to post one or all of the activity sheets in the classroom to serve as a reminder of the pledge.

ï Please copy the activity on the reverse side of this sheet for the children to complete.

Infection Control Activity

This hygiene activity can be made into a more complex activity. Simply cut a germ picture up and have them put together the puzzle.

Importance of Hand Washing:

ï Germs are so small that you can not see them and they can be found almost everywhere.

ï Washing your hands can help to get rid of germs. Germs can make you sick.

ï There are many types of germs (ie-bacteria, viruses).

ï Bacteria and viruses cause illness and disease.

ï Some illnesses and diseases that are caused by bacteria and viruses are very serious.

ï Some examples of illnesses and diseases caused by bacteria and viruses are: colds, flu, pneumonia, hepatitis, and Shigellosis.

ï Washing your hands is the best way to prevent these illnesses and diseases.

Importance of Hand Washing:

ï Illnesses and diseases caused by bacteria and viruses can be very serious and can even cause death if not properly treated.

ï Germs can be spread 4 ways: fecal-oral contact (ie-hepatitis A and Shigellosis), direct/close contact (ie-lice), blood contact (ie-HIVIAIDS and hepatitis B) and respiratory/airborne contact (ie-influenza and colds).

Find the germ words! This is a great Glo Germ lesson for an older crowd.

Germ Crossword Puzzle

After the students are finished finding the germ words that fit in the crossword puzzle, apply Glo Germ Gel and then have the students wash their hands (as they normally do). After washing, use the LED UV black light to show the germs that they failed to wash off. Instruct them to wash their hands again.
