What is water and why is it called h2o? In science class we are taught that water is two hydrogen molecule to one oxygen molecule. It is a wonderful addition to a healthy lifestyle.
H2o is just good water!
Water is so important because our bodies need it to survive and maintain a balanced internal environment. Start drinking more and develop a healthy habit. You can shed a few pounds by replacing sugary or artificially sweetened drinks this wonder liquid. You really do feel better when you add more water to your daily routine. Water is cool, it is sexy. We bathe in it. We play in it. Water is relaxing and refreshing in many ways.

H2O is the wonderful chemical water.
It is life.
Without it our planet would not support us. It is a fascinating element because it can be found in 3 different ways. In it's basic form water is a liquid. Water as a vapor is humidity, mist, fog, steam, and clouds. It is a solid in the form of ice.
It is the only element on earth that can be found in all 3 forms.
This precious liquid is the central component of our life support systems here on earth and why Earth can sustain life. The inhabitants of our planet need water for life. Plants, animals, and humans alike rely on it. We all drink and intake water in one form or another. H2o is essential to the healthy operation of our ecosystem.
It is a vital essence we cannot live long without.

The Food And Nutrition Board
An original recommended daily water intake was reported in the year 1945.
The report read:
United States National Research Council's Food and Nutrition Board recommends 3.7 liters for men and 2.7 liters of water total for women (including food sources). Water intake for an ordinary standard is 1 mil.for each calorie of food.
By eating foods such as fruits and vegetables high in water content we can reduce the amount of water we drink straight from the bottle for our daily intake. Soups and stews, salads and juices are also water sources.
Watermelon anyone? Melons, fruits, and vegetables are great food sources for water.
Develop A Drinking Water Habit

Drinking water is the best way to hydrate without adding a ton of unnecessary calories. By cutting out sugary and artificially sweetened beverages and drinking mostly H2O I have peeled off about 15 pounds! This good water habit has been a very healthy choice in my life!
Water is not only great for dieting it is good for your skin and your body's systems as you saw in the video.
I drink H2O at meals with a slice of lemon or lime dropped in it for a little flavor. I developed a good water habit by taking a 16 oz bottle of water out the door when I leave for work . I consume at least two more bottles during the day, and make sure I have one next to my bedside table at night.
It took me sometime to develop a good water habit but it has been so worth it!

Water IS so good for our health. What do we need to know about water to store it properly?
Potable H2O vs. Safe Water
What about bathwater?
Water we drink or cook with is called potable water.
Have you ran across a sign that read Non-Potable Water?
Non-Potable water would be for washing or bathing only. The H2O from this source may contain harmful organisms or the water is somehow not human drinking water quality. Is not fit for drinking unless it is processed safely. It is recommended you boil this water even before you wash or clean with it. It might be a great source for washing your car but I wouldn't make a soup with it!
Safe processing of non-potable water is filtering, boiling, distilling, or sanitizing using drops of bleach.
Water is safe H2O if it is not fit for drinking but usable for swimming, bathing, or washing. Ocean water is an example of safe water.
Water Storage Should Not Be Exposed To Sunlight!
Always store water in a dark place away from exposure to sunlight. Light encourages the growth of bacteria.
Rotate and replace your water storage every 4 - 6 months.

pH levels and Stagnate Water
Bacteria grows in standing water. It can also grow in water that is not stored correctly. Store bought water in bottles and tap water is already qualified to be drinkable through Federally regulated testing standards and acceptable processing. Water found in puddles, lakes, streams, rivers, waterfalls, and anywhere else has to be questioned for safety before it is consumed and potentially makes us very sick.
If the situation arises where you have to process H2O in the wild we need more information to determine if this is a water source we can filter, process, and prepare for drinkable water.
Under a microscope bacteria in water looks like a busy ocean with odd creatures and particles. Bacterial colonies can be dangerously plentiful and never be seen with the naked eye.

Unclean Water - An Invisible Danger
The unseen dangers in water cannot be determined with the naked eye. Water can look good but cause some serious or deadly problems if it is not fit for intake. pH levels can be hazardous as well as microscopic organisms. If we are already in a survival mode the last thing we need to worry about is illness from drinking bad water!
pH levels in water determine if water is acidic or alkaline. Stagnant water occurs when H2O is not free flowing and it sits for a length of time making it highly unhealthy to drink. It is very dangerous to consume stagnate water. Learn to look for signs that water is good to use for drinking water. Living animals in a puddle is a good sign. Things like water creatures or small fish. Healthy water from a stream or a waterfall can be good H2O sources. As always, condition your water by filtering and/ or sanitizing to further be cautious with water's quality.
Water Filtering - Rid H2O of Contaminants
Investing in a water filtration system is an important solution for purifying drinking water. There are filters designed in various sizes for individual convenience or for producing large quantities of H2O. They include straw type filters, pitchers which yield small amounts of potable water up to a gallon, to large oil drum sized water systems that collect and filter out contaminants like debris, bacteria, and organisms in water.

Dirty water is processed through a filter to remove bacteria, protozoa and microbial cysts that can cause disease. Filters may have fine meshes that must be replaced or cleaned, and ceramic H2O filters must have their outside abraded when they have become clogged with impurities.
These water filters should not be confused with devices or tablets that are water purifiers, some of which remove or kill viruses such as hepatitis A and rotavirus.

Purify Water By Boiling It
Boiling Removes Bacteria
Boiling water is also necessary for purifying water. Boil water after you have filtered it. Boiling water is recommended especially after your power or water service has been interrupted even temporarily. The H2O in your home's pipes or water that you find in a natural setting may look clean but may contain microscopic hazards. Until you know for certain your water source is safe, process what you need for intake. When you have boiled it make sure you have sanitized containers to store it in or you will re-contaminate the water.

Bringing water to the boil is effective in killing or inactivating most bacteria, viruses and pathogens. Boiling is the most certain way of killing nearly all microorganisms. Water temperatures above 160Â°F (70Â°C) kill all pathogens within 30 minutes and above 185Â°F (85Â°C) within a few minutes. So in the time it takes for the water to reach the boiling point (212Â°F or 100Â°C) from 160Â°F (70Â°C) all pathogens will be killed, even at high altitude. To be extra safe, let the water boil rapidly for one minute, especially at higher altitudes since water boils at a lower temperature.
Chlorine Bleach To Purify Water
Chlorine bleach is used as a way to purify water. Always choose a liquid chlorine bleach that has no colors or perfumes for water treatment. It removes 99% of the bacteria from water. Sterilize your water containers to prevent contamination of the new clean water.
Store sanitized water in containers that have been sterilized by bleaching or submerging in boiling water for about 2 minutes. Sterilize them the same way you would a baby bottle. Let air dry.
Mix 2 to 3 drops bleach per quart of water to sanitize tap water or H2O from a questionable source. When you have water ready you must store it in a clean container!
Be very careful when measuring bleach. Use a trusted eye dropper to determine the exact amount. Bleach can burn your skin and be poisonous. Too much bleach in the water can be toxic. Water that is purified by bleach should be allowed to sit overnight to allow sediment and particles to drop to the bottom.

Drink Safe Water
Tablets for purifying water are perfect for emergency kits because they don't take up much valuable space. They are simply dropped in the water. The water is ready to use in just a few minutes in most cases. Iodine tablets and Iodine crystals are another method of improving water quality.
Storing Water For Emergency
How Much Water?
Keeping water on hand is not only great for your health but storing water is a must do for emergency planning. You never know when you are going to need it.
My apartment complex is always getting work done on the pipes and water system. Having water for little emergencies like this means I can keep going through my daily routine without the disrupted water service issue disturbing my routines or peace of mind. Make sure to have plenty of water on hand for what if's!
How much water should you keep on hand? Store at least 1 gallon for washing and at least 1/2 gallon per person for drinking water. Add another 1/2 gallon of water for cooking per person per day. Set aside a minimum of 3 days water rations for emergency situations.
Use individual water bottles for drinking water and portion control. Use gallon size bottled water for cooking and for hot water to bathe in, wash with, or for general cleaning. If there is room for the larger 5 gallon bottles they are a great way to store water for emergencies!
Water Storage Containers - For Drinking And Potable Water
Water storage containers should be easy to lift and use. Healthier materials in the packaging are important. BPA free bottles are best for our drinking water storage because they won't leach harmful chemicals into the water we have stored for emergency use. For maximum coverage in water storage get at least one 5 gallon container for each member of your family. An individual reusable bottle would be an ideal addition to emergency kits or for daily use.
A great way to have water storage for related emergencies is a large barrel or smaller manageable containers. Stock H2O away for washing or drinking. Containers for water storage should be solid, quality materials that keep your water in good condition. Events do come along where we might have a temporary loss of water supply in the home. The large barrel should be placed on your property outside where the sun does not directly contact it or in a shed or garage area. If you have the space indoors on a tiled floor, that would be even better.

As crazy as it sounds your hot water heater and the main toilet tank are already storing water for you! Depending on the size of your hot water heater you may already have on hand at least 40 gallons of H2O in storage for bathing and washing. These odd places can be tapped for safe water but if you want to drink it you will have to process it to purify it.
It is recommended for people in hurricane areas to fill the tub with water before the storm sends a surge up the canal systems and creates a toxic city water supply.

One of the best ways to relax and meditate is with ocean, waterfall sounds, or a soothing fountain. The sound of water can smooth over ravaged nerves and tuck you into a more agreeable mood if you have had a rough or very busy day. Waterfalls are a great way to ponder through healthy thoughts, clear your mind, and just let yourself go.

H2O is Fun!
We love playing in and around water!
One of the first things we think of with water fun is going to the beach or a pool. Swimming is great excersize and a dose of vitamin D through sunshine (moderately! don't forget the sunscreen!) is a great lift and time out in a hectic world!
H2O is great fun for surfing, fishing, floating around in, or just walking or playing on a beach.
I love sitting on a beach and watching the waves and their patterns. It lulls me into a state of serenity and a calm feeling. It is a very healthy way to recharge the mind with good energy!
