Health Effects of Water Pollution in the US

Updated on November 29, 2013

The Health Effects of Water Pollution is a Frightening Reality we face in the United States!

The health effects of water pollution are becoming a frightening reality for people in every heavily populated country around the world including the United States.

According to the Ralph Nader Research Institute our drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer in humans. Even trace amounts of prescription drugs including antibiotics, sedatives, anti-anxiety and anti-epileptic drugs, are being detected in our drinking water supply.

Other dangerous pollutants include heavy metals such as lead, chlorine, fluoride, pesticides and other dangerous chemicals from farm run-off and manufacturing waste, chlorine resistant parasites and even human feces.

The issue of water pollution and public health should concern everyone!

Water on day of creation
Water on day of creation

No New Water!

There is no such thing as New Water! Except for a few million gallons from comets possibly crashing into the earth we were given all the water mankind would ever have to survive on the day of Creation or the Big Bang.

Planet earth is a closed system that uses our precious water over and over again and virtually any chemicals we use find their way into our water supply. The toxicity found in our water increases as our use of SOCs also increases. Our wonderful earth's ability to filter and process these dangerous chemicals is not sufficient to rid the earth of toxic SOCs and it is not possible for our municipal water treatment facilities to effectively treat our water.

It is easy and convenient to place the blame on corporate America and giant manufacturing companies around the world but each one of us is guilty to some degree. Some of the dangerous contaminants found in our water can be traced to excessive or improper usage of familiar chemicals like lawn fertilizers, dry-cleaning type solvents and other cleaning products, gasoline and other petrochemical compounds.

A sobering picture begins to emerge when we realize that everything that goes on our lawns or what a farmer sprays on his fields or we pour down the drain all ends up in the very water we are forced to drink. In the past many illnesses that could not be attributed to a definite or probable cause have now been linked to the toxic chemicals found in our drinking water. Although the levels of these known carcinogens found in our drinking water are relatively low, "carcinogenists" now believe it is precisely these low levels that can be attributed to the majority of cancers diagnosed in humans in the United States according to the Council on Environmental Quality.

Most water treatment plants in the US are antiquated using the same technology used at the turn of the century which includes sand filtration and dumping tons of bleach into the water. They simply do not remove the dangerous SOCs! In other words our drinking water has had the visible particles filtered out and bleach added to kill most living organisms and that is about it.

Dr. David Ozonoff of Boston University, a leading American authority on water pollution, states that "the risk associated with disease from drinking water from public systems has become Real instead of just Theory."

One of the major flaws in estimating the risks of consuming chemicals found in drinking water is the patently false assumption that only one chemical at a time is being consumed. Regulations are based upon what is believed to be safe for a healthy 175 pound adult who drinks water with only one chemical and does not consider the combined effect or toxicity of multiple chemicals.

According to a 1995 report to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "when two or multiple contaminants found in drinking water are combined it may increase the potency by as much as 1,000%!"

Documented Health Effects of Water Pollution!

The use of over 80,000 different synthetic chemicals in our society have certainly added to the quality of our lives but only at an incredibly high priceā€¦the drastic increase in incidents of degenerative diseases. All of these different chemicals eventually end up in our drinking water supplies.

Way back in the early 1900s and before the prevalent use of chlorine, herbicides, pesticides and the thousands of other chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis, the average American was estimated to have a 1 in 50 chance of developing cancer. Today that ratio has changed to 1 of 3 people that can be expected to develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 of every 2 males.

According to a recent report from the Ralph Nader Study Group citing information obtained as a result of the Freedom of Information Act, stated that drinking water in the United States contains in excess of 2,100 different toxic chemicals that are known to cause cancer. The use of man-made or synthetic chemicals has become so prevalent that traces of these low level Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOCs) can be found in every municipal drinking water supply worldwide.

What can we do to reduce the Effects of Water Pollution?

Reports like this are forcing people to look for practical solutions to our drinking water crisis. It is clear that we cannot look to our government to protect us. Their solution is to keep dumping more and more chlorine bleach into our public drinking water which is itself a known cause of certain cancers.

Drinking Bottled Water gives us only the illusion of drinking safe clean water. Bottled water was developed to solve the logistical challenges of getting potable water to victims of disasters and conflicts. Most bottled water is simply reprocessed municipal water that is run through a carbon filter to improve the taste and smell but does almost nothing to remove the dangerous contaminants. The dangers of drinking bottled water are about the same as drinking tap water!

Our landfills are overrun by empty polycarbonate water bottles and the molding process used to form the bottles produces harmful fluorohydrocarbons that are released into the atmosphere. Not to mention the pollution created during the extraction, processing, and transportation of the raw materials.

Bottled water costs as much as $1.00 per gallon and when a bottle is left in the sunlight the plastic releases dangerous toxins into the water that can easily be detected by taste.

A high quality home water filter is capable of removing 99% to 100% of the dangerous contaminants found in our drinking water. A good quality system will produce clean safe drinking water for less than $.15 cents per gallon and some as low as $.05 Per Gallon.

Thoughts and Recommendations!

There are Effective Measures we can take to minimize the effects of Water Pollution in our lives!

If your water source is Untreated such as a well or spring or has heavy salt content or radioactive contamination then a Reverse Osmosis system with an optional Mineralizer/Ionizer Cartridge to replenish the vital trace minerals will remove 100% of the dangerous contaminants.

Since a home water filter is a health related product I highly recommend purchasing from a credible and well established US manufacturer (or an authorized dealer) that can provide you with documented test results from a credible independent testing institution. This will also increase the likelihood that replacement filter cartridges can be obtained years from now. Only buy from a company that offers a 100% Money Back Guarantee plus at least a one year warranty.

A high quality reverse osmosis filtration system with an optional mineralization/ionization filter is considered by most authorities to be the ultimate water filter system, however unless your water source contains heavy salt content and or radiation contamination investing in a Reverse Osmosis Filtration System is not necessary. A high quality reverse osmosis filtration system can cost over $1000 and they tend to waste about 4 gallons of water for every gallon treated. Of course the waste water can be recycled!

I am not trying to discourage anyone from investing in a RO system because they truly are the ultimate but they are also:

1. More expensive than a high quality Multi Stage filtering system.

2. More difficult to install.

3. Require an electrical connection.

4. Wastes approximately 4 gallons for every one that is treated.

5. A RO system removes the vital minerals from the water in addition to any pollutants so it is wise to invest a little extra in a mineralization/ionization filter.

If your water source is from a Treated municipal water source a better option is a Multi Stage filtering system that will sit right on your countertop or mount under the kitchen sink. A high quality multi stage water filter system will effectively remove up to 99% of all the dangerous contaminants in the water for about One Quarter the initial cost of a Reverse Osmosis system. A good quality multi stage filter will produce clean safe drinking water for less than 15 cents per gallon for many years to come.

NOTE: Thousands of very authentic looking counterfeit multi stage water filter systems produced by certain Asian countries have been dumped on the US market and can be found on many websites. To avoid being ripped off purchase only from a reputable established US company or authorized dealer who offers a 100% Money Back Guarantee and who will likely be in business 5 or 10 years from now to supply you with replacement filters. Be certain the Manufacturer or Dealer can provide you with current test results from an independent testing laboratory or testing institution.

Always look to see what the INFLUENT readings are for each contaminant and then compare to the test results after passing through the system.

When you research and investigate the home Water Filter Industry as much as I have one of the first things you learn is that the Companies with most amount of Advertising, the Fanciest Websites and most Suductive Ads are usually the poorest quality and least effective.

This is an eye-opening article! We purchased a Crystal Quest water filter over a year ago and have had no problems with it. It has saved us $$ from bottled water and I think the quality of the water is better, not to mention stops contribuiting to the landfill. Good job, Ken
