Home Remedies for Ear Infections and Ear Aches

Updated on October 23, 2012

Ear infections and ear aches make us miserable and can be resistant to medications

My 2 year old daughter gets an ear infection before and after every cold or flu bug she gets. Steroids, antibiotics, and other prescription drugs do not seem to help. So I went out to look for some herbal and home remedies to solve the problem. This lense is about the information that I found. I do not recommend or endorse any specific treatment without talking to your physician first.

I will try to sort the remedies by trial and error, herbal, wives tales, and home remedies/general advice. I hope this information helps you as much as it did me.

Wives Tales and Folk Remedies

* Urine in the ear. - To clear up and ear infection and relieve an earache put 5-7 drops of warm urine caught midstream in the infected ear. Lay on opposite ear for 5 minutes then drain infected ear.

My grandma swears by this remedy along with my parents and great grandparents. Its gross but they never had to take their kids to doctor like I do for ear infections so it must work. If you have tried this one or had it tried on you as a child please comment on your experience.

*Vinegar & Water- drop a solution of 2 drops vinegar to 10 drops of water in ear. Mix solution before putting in ear. Acid kills the bacteria.

* My Favorite: Breastmilk in the ear. Put a couple of drops of freshly expressed breastmilk in the infected ear every 3-6 hours and ear infection will be gone in 48 hours or less.

Herbal Remedies

*Tea Tree Oil- Chiropractor recommended Tea Tree Oil for ear infections. You can probably find 'Wally's Ear Oil' containing tea tree oil, garlic oil, etc. at your local health store. Just put 3 drops in the infected ear and lay on opposite ear for 15-20 minutes for relief.

*Olive Oil - warm olive oil gently to a little above lukewarm. use 3-5 drops in infected ear.

* Peppermint Oil mixed with Olive Oil- warm gently and use 3-5 drops in infected ear. peppermint oil has natural anesthetic in it.

*Put a drop or two of goldenseal tincture (avail. at herbal stores) in the affected ear. Put a drop or two each of tea tree oil and lavender oil on a cotton ball and put the cotton ball in the ear. Leave overnight.

*Neem Oil- Put of two drops of Neem oil daily into infected ear cures otomycosis caused by a fungus.

*garlic oil capsules- use the capsules as ear-drops putting 2 to 3 drops in the affected ear once or twice a day

Tea Tree Oil Update

Tea Tree Oil really works. I have been using it since I started this blurb. My children haven't had another ear infection since. This also helps with ear infections during teething, swimmers ear and sinus congestion in the ear. I love it, best of all, NO MORE EXPENSIVE DOCTOR VISITS. I get so irritated making 3 - 4 visits to doctor before they even diagnose the ear infection and then having the antibiotics not even work. Now I can pretty much treat them at home before they get painful. I do recommend seeing a doctor if it worsens or pain does not go away after 24 hrs. Yes it seems to work that fast on my kids. I try to combine it with children's Ibuprofen to get the inflammation down or children's Tylenol for the pain.

do NOT put tee tree oil in your ear before mixing it in a carrier oiil!! no mention here of mixing i put a drop in and jesus christ, i have given brith to two kids with nopain killers, this was the worst pain i have ever felt, curled into a feotal ball crying my eyes out. garlic can cause skin blistering i decided to try on my skin before makign same mistake came up in a big red lister which i would not have liked to have on my ear drum. be sure you dilute any essential oils before you put them anywhere near your ear hole, around your ear miht be ok but not into teh ear canal straight as this could cause huge pain and then you have to go to the doctor adn tell him what you did and look like a complete moron for taking advice from the internet. v embaressing.

I thought the urine cure sounded nuts, but I was desperate, pacing the floor in pain all day with no relief from OTC pain meds. I tried it on myself. I let it sit for 30 seconds or so and then dried it out because I didn't want it just sitting in my ear. It eased up quite a bit within just a few minutes, like almost right away. It's not completely gone, but I'm going to do it again when I more medicine. I may let it sit longer this time. I'm very surprised.

Just tried the urine drops in my sons ear, for his painful swimmers earache, already relieved some of the pain, going to do it again as soon as he can go potty again, i will put another 3 to 4 drops, then have him lay on opposite ear for 5 minutes, then drain the affected ear. So far its eased up, Im sure this next set of drops will clear the rest up. Just relieved its eases some of my babys pain so far, thanks for the info. I hate to see my baby boy in pain...Mommy

I know y'all think that it is probably the nastiest thing you could ever put in your ear... But I have used the urine cure for ear infections for years now and it flat out works!!!! Use your own personal midstream urine and drop an earfull in there, stick a cottonball in it, and go to bed (lay on the opposite side) and wake up cured!!!! I have done this for myself and my son did it the last time he had an earache, too. It hasn't failed me one time, ever.

So I have to admit until I read this I thought my grandma, great grandma and mother were going crazy but I guess it's not just some weird(& embarrassing) family secret; Good old urine in the ear, my great grandma swears by it for ear infections and I guess used it on me as a child along with a silver dollar taped on my belly button to make an outty an I inny. I find it hilarious that some point in history somebody randomly poured urine into there ear for an infection and it actually worked imagine the story about how that came about!! I just had to comment to say as crazy and unsanitary as it sounds it Works!!!!

Thanks - this makes sense, tea tree is very anti-bacterial. I will try this next time one of the kids gets an ear infection!

I often get ear problems, stemming from sinusitis. I think I'll try the tea tree oil next time! Thanks for a useful, concise lens!

@nifwlseirff: I love using it. Since we started adding drops to the kids ears as soon as they get a sinus cold with drainage, none have had a single ear infection. We went from an ear infection once a month to none in 1 year.

@ElizabethSheppard: Wow. that would probable work for most people too. My sister uses hydrogen peroxide to drain her ears but the fizzy noise hurts my daughters ears. Or so she says.

Hi! I used to use Swimmer's Ear Drops in my ear if I had an earache. It helped sometimes. I have also tried alcohol, but very diluted. I would lie down and let the ear drop(s) go in my ear, then drain it out on a towel. I know, sounds gross! But it worked sometimes. Other times I had to go to the doctor and get "regular" ear drops. It is neat to hear about other remedies too.
