How To Bless A House

Updated on August 16, 2014

What Does Blessing A House Mean?

Blessing a house is a gift that leaves your home feeling safe, balanced, and supportive to the activities of all those who live and pass through it.

There are various reasons why people want to learn how to bless a house; things like wanting to say thank you when leaving a home, making a statement in a new house, healing an atmosphere left by sadness or anger, or honouring a sacred day or important event.

Whether the feeling of peace and balance in a house after a house blessing is the result of prayer and the intercession between you and a divine being, the energy field of the person doing the blessing, the pschology of the occupants following a blessing, an alteration in the fabric of the building, the physiological effects of any essential oils you might use, or a combination of all these and more, is a matter for personal belief, and doesn't actually matter.

Whatever the reasons, there is no doubt that a blessed house feels special.

To Bless A House, You Need To Clean It First

It stands to reason that your house needs to be clean and orderly to start with. If it isn't, then you need to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into some cleaning.

Sometimes it's just a corner or cupboard that needs sorting, sometimes the whole house will feel magically better after a really thorough steam clean or scrub. I'm sure this is the basis for spring cleaning traditions, and the preparations for Passover in the Jewish religion.

Many essential oils have powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties, and work as well, if not better than commercially produced disinfectants.

Using Aromatic Plants To Bless A House

It doesn't really matter how or why the act of blessing with aromatic plants works. It is a common practice to all religions throughout time, but equally it needs no religious belief at all in it's simplicity and practicality.

Whatever your god, goddess or principle, mindfully infusing the air with essential oils whilst focusing your mind with positive intent will have a powerfully beneficial effect on you, your household, and your house.

There is a wide choice of resins, oils and blends with which to bless your home; your choice will be affected by what you feel your home needs, and what activities you know your house will be supporting in the following months.

Get Centred To Bless A House

Being centred means being alert and observant with a calm mind and spirit.

If you want to make changes, the first thing is to feel clear, calm and energized.

This is a really lovely blend of oils that awakens the mind, help focus thought and brings bright energy when you are feeling dull and tired.

Use essential oils to leave thoughts, worries and the outside world behind, and attend to the needs of your house with full, unhurried attention.

The Bergamot will lift the spirits, the Basil will focus the mind, the Lemon will sharpen the senses and the Grapefruit will fill the air with sparkling, wholesome energy.

How To Bless A House

Your home is ready to be blessed, and the simplest way to do that is to move around your home offering a beautiful fragrance whilst thinking or saying out loud some words that are meaningful to you. I like to make sure I include cupboards, stairs, doors and corridors, along with all the hard working equipment like cookers and computers etc.

There is always a centre in a living space, however big or small that is the heart of the home. It might be a table, fireplace, a dresser or where you cook, but you will know it instinctively, and this is where your blessing ceremony will end. At that place, having blessed everywhere else, take a few moments to be still and end your ceremony however feels right to you. Some folk make a small bow, some say a short prayer, some just say thank really doesn't matter. What matters is that it feels right and authentic to you.

The most profound blessings are those that come from deep within. They are not complicated, and don't need fancy rituals to be effective. What is important is a calm and light intent, and actions and words or thoughts that are personally meaningful.

  1. Enjoy connecting with the spirit and energy of your house and decide on your blessing. Be open to the words that come to you, or choose one of the blessings listed further on here.

  2. Choose a recommended essential oil or one that feels right for you

  3. Add the essential oil to a bowl of water or atomizer. Thank the plant for its sacrifice and gift.

  4. Take your infused water and sprinkle or spray it around whilst speaking or thinking your blessing.

Although I'm not an advocate of complicated rituals personally, it does help the process if the tools you use have a sense of quality and are pleasing to you

There's something special about cobalt blue glass. Even these small atomizers feel a little bit special.

Who Can Bless A House?

Anyone can bless a house if they know how. Some people can just bless a place by passing through it, and there are some who leave places feeling blessed without even knowing it. But for most of us it helps to perform some kind of simple ritual.

Performing a blessing is not something exclusive to any religion or belief group, and there are no set rules other than those developed specifically for use by those religions and groups. All forms of blessing have evolved over time, and there is much collective wisdom in many of the rituals practiced.

Blessings can be a personal thing, and when carried out privately with respect and honesty, they can be strong, valid and very powerful.

I have not yet but this is something that I may consider in the future. I know our home has a lot of love withing it's wall but there also was sadness in the past. Perhaps it does need a small blessing each year. It certainly could not hurt.

Great lens. It is insightful. My wife and I have blessed our homes and workplaces for years. In addition to what you have here, we also play music overnight to clean out a place.

I have done a blessing on my home, but I think we will do another. We waved branches in all the directions of the house and prayed. For the new blessing, I guess I have to start with the cleaning! Pinned to my board "this I want you to know" and blessed.
