Clear Up Acne Now with Green Tea!

Updated on May 27, 2009

Green Tea and Acne, the Basics

Though there is no actual cure for acne, an effective all natural acne treatment can be found at your local grocery store. I am talking about green tea. Green tea has been shown to treat acne and even be as effective as benzoil peroxide in some cases! So move over minocycline, salacylic acid, and adaplene gel, it's time for mother nature to have a shot at acne treatment! Goodbye zits!

A nice cup of green tea can help fight acne.
A nice cup of green tea can help fight acne.

About Green Tea

Immediately after harvest, green tea leaves are steamed to prevent the tea leaves from fermenting. This allows the leaves to retain their natural antioxidants and polyphenols, giving green tea its acne fighting power. Green tea has no calories, and can be naturally decaffeinated giving the tea all manner of health benefits. There is evidence that the antioxidants in green tea can help prevent cancer caused by free radicals and increase metabolism. So drinking green tea has many benefits in addition to acne treatment!

Incorporating Green Tea for Successful Acne Treatment

Green Tea By The Cup

How much green tea should you drink for optimal acne treatment potential? I'd say at least three to four cups worth. This may sound like a lot, but three cups of tea a day is definitely attainable. Your typical coffee mug is 12 fluid ounces, or the same as a can of soda. Just replace these empty calories with green tea, and you'll easily hit your quota and start acne fighting!

Green Tea Extract Capsules

If the taste of green tea does not appeal to you, green tea extract is available in capsule form. You can find it at any major pharmacy in the supplements aisle. Each green tea capsule is roughly equivalent to two cups of tea on average (depending on dosage) and retains all the polyphenols and antioxidants to zap those zits!

Applying Green Tea Directly to the Skin

Your third option is to apply green tea directly at the source. Purchase some bags of tea like normal and wet them. Then rub the tea bags all over your acne and let it dry. I've had folks with moderate to severe acne suggest this, and they have said it helped them achieve acne free clear skin like no other treatment!

Fresh green tea leaves.

Where to Purchase Green Tea for Acne Treatment

Ready to buy some green tea to help cure your acne? Well quality bags are easy enough to find. I recommend going to your local grocery store and picking up a box of Tazo China Green Tips, Tazo Zen, or Celesteal Seasonings Decaf Green Tea. These should set you back about four dollars for 20-40 bags depending on the brand. If uncut and unbagged tea leaves are your thing, you will have to find an herb store or farmers market of some sort. This blog provides information on the different types of green tea.

Good Luck!

So if you've been through the works of acne remedies - Accutane, Differin, minocycline, benzoil peroxide, salacylic acid, you name it - and you are looking for an all natural alternative, green tea is inexpensive and readily available.  As an acne remedy, green tea has no harmful side effects.  The worst it can do is help protect you from cancer, so go ahead, give green tea a shot!

I have found many ways that people say works for them and i have only tried a few but they solhud work depending on what skin type you have. also if you have drier skin, like me, you might want to avoid products unless they say for dry skin or they will irritate your skin. Some things you can do are: -rub an ice cube on the pimple for about 15 minutes and if it gets way too cold you can take it off for a little break. some people say its best when you do this three times a day and do not use any products when doing this. -take a bowl of warm water and put a lot of salt in it. then dip one cotton ball in the water for 30 seconds and squeeze the excess water out so it doesn't drip, but dont drain all the water out. then take the cotton ball and put it on you pimple for about 3 minutes and then take it off. your pimple solhud look smaller but if you dont do the next step it will reappear within the next few hours! you solhud take two clean cotton balls and place one on each side of the pimple. then move the two cotton balls toward the pimple to flatten it out. after you have flatten it, it is recommended to put honey on top. -take some toothpaste and put it on the affected area. some people leave it on for about 10 minutes and other people sleep on it. the toothpaste you use solhud be a basic white one, but you DO NOT WANT A WHITENING TOOTHPASTE. if you use a whitening toothpaste it might make the acne worse. also for me i like using clean and clear oil removal wipes. they work really well and you can actually see the oil that is removed on the wipe. make sure you drink water throughout the day because this will make your skin hydrated! hope this helped!!!!

I am not a tea person, I just wanted to try tea, so at the shop I picked up green tea, not knowing the benefit at all. I have had acne problem for almost 19 years now. I am forty three years old. I was told by my doctor after giving birth that it will be cleared up I have tried Minocin, doxcycline and many other antibiotics. I was referred to see a dermatologist, I was told to take Acutane tablet, Idid nt because I was scared of the side effects. I have used Proactive Clarins, Clinique, Clear Essence and many other acne creams. After about two weeks of my taking green and lemon, I noticed the white and red head was drying off, no more new swollen coming out. Before when I wake up in the morning I could see at least three to four new pimples. Thank God after many years I could see my face looking smooth fresh and no new zits. I am really happy about the improvement, my children are all happy too, at least they can see how the changes has given me immediate excitement, I would recommend it to all my friends.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lots of research and experimenting 6 years ago

I have experimented with LOTS of topicals!!! and i MEAN LOTS. right now i am on doxycycline along with natural topical that i created myself after hours of research. The topical consists of jojoba oil, manuka oil and tea tree oil. It can be a bit drying but the jojoba oil really does moisturize the skin. I used to have clear skin 6 months ago but it was because i dated a girl whose family drank tea twice a day and i practically lived there. I drank it too. then we broke up and i never drink it anymore. NOW after reading a bit i realized what green tea had done for me, and i am drinking at least 2 cups a day since 10/10/2011. I will come back in about a month and report my results, continuing with topicals, green tea and antibiotics (which i plan to give up after 6 months). I WILL LET U KNOW HOW IT GOES, but i am 99% sure it will work because i've always had acne and somehow I managed to clear it up for 4-5 months while I WAS on it without realizing it was doing anything for me.

I learn drinking green tea 2-3 times a day and use the tea bag to rub on the face will help with acne. Also it will be a good idea to have some green tea in a spray container to use. I will start giving this a try today since i've bought some green tea today.I hope this works.

I applied green tea and lemon mix. I put lemon and clear up some dark spots from acne. Anyway, my pimples went down in a couple of hours! OXY I applied for days and the pimples did not go down with that. I've been using vitamin E capsules too at night for dark spots and it works! They lighten in two weeks. Three inexpensive and natural products that work better than anything else.

I suggest using loose leaf green tea if you can find it. I live in Japan right now so it's really easy to find it. I've been steeping the leaves in the morning to drink (you can steep the leaves about 3 times), then keeping the leaves in a container until the night time, when I rub them on my face. I leave them on for a few minutes, until it dries, and rinse it off with warm water. My skin isn't miraculously clearer or anything, but the fine lines on my forehead are almost invisible now, and the redness of my acne scars is reduced.

For all of you who feel that it tastes gross, try a light green tea, maybe with the citrus blend, and add plenty of honey! For those of you whom it is not working for or think that its rubbish, well, its true not one thing works for every one person, but its an antioxidant and you may be drinking the tea but reversing the effects with bad foofds and other improper drink choices.

Just to say, I have gone through phases of drinking green tea and applying it directly to my face. I use organic loose leaves. My skin goes through very bad to mild bouts of acne as has since I was a teen.

Green Tea works for me! There is no other way to put it. And boy have I tried it all.

Acne has so many triggers and is often largely internal and related to stress, diet and hormones etc. I am not going to say it has cured me completely, but I had large painful pimples around my jaw line and the inflammation and redness has decreased.

I don't mind the taste anymore. In fact I like it. I never used to! I have also noticed, since I have been spraying it onto my skin daily ( kind of a lot actually) that my skin is really soft and hydrated. I love that. Normally with my harsh acne cleanser if I don't moisturize, my skin feels tight and dry and looks lackluster.

Green Tea is good for you. Period. It does not seem to work for everyone, but that may be due to all sorts of unknown factors/ allergies etc. So for those who say it is bogus, I am here to say sorry, it isn't. At least not for the rest of us. :-)

Ive been using every acne treatment i could find and buy in the pharmacys . And not once have any of them worked . Ive tried ; noxzemma , orange acne cleanser , olay , and a bunch more . I get REALLI bad breakouts on my checks , not so much my forehead . Ive had these for 5 years now . and they just WONT go away . And like i said ive used almost everything . I usually stay in the house , because im ashamed of going in public with massive breakouts on my cheeks . And i try and stay home from school as much as possible . But i need school for education . Its just hard facing people with these horrible break outs . So i started researching the last two days . And found out green tea works , for many purposes . So i decided im going to go to the grochery store later , and buy some green tea , and hopefully it works . but does it matter which brand you buy ? . Or can you use any brand of green tea? please help and answer me .

      Thank you .

I've been drinking green tea for about a month and a half now and I've noticed such a big difference!! I've been on the pill, medications, used clinique and yes, even proactive lol. I drink about 4 generous cups a day and every day I've lost a pimple and never gained another. My skin is clear now yayayay!! All these "solutions" westernized countries offer are only cures and ridiculous ones at that. Green tea was such an odd thing to prevent pimples and acne, I always doubted it's effects and I swear by it now. :)

I wonder if I was severely lacking antioxidants? Odd!

It's nice to hear other people are getting results too :)

I have had fairly clear skin all my life so far, with few blackheads/whiteheads, but what would happen is I would suddenly get big breakouts of red pimples on my forehead. :/ Absolute pain in the butt, plus I hated to go out in public with them! I tried Proactive (the toner and healing lotion stuff), it didn't work. The toner burned my skin when I put it on the pimples, like putting rubbing alcohol on a cut. Plus it would sometimes dry out my skin and cause pealing.

I've also tried lotions that are suppose to dry out pimples and get rid of them-and keep them away-fast and effectively. Ha! Toothpaste worked better then them! :/

I've been looking up natural home remedies, and I have found some recipes for effective, natural face masks that I will try when I get all the supplies, such as honey, oatmeal, etc. But then I also read that green tea can help. So, I found some Super Green Tea (Good Earth brand), and I steeped one tea bag in a bowl of hot water, and then I placed it firmly on my forehead where I'm currently having a bad pimple breakout. I held it there for several minutes, then rinsed with cold water, and then rinsed my face with the warm water that the tea bag was soaking in in the bowl. Then, I gently rubbed the tea bag all over my face, particularly on my forehead, and let it dry. I noticed that it immediately started to dry out the pimples and reduce the red swelling. But that's all so far, but I will continue doing this to see if it works! I will write back to let you know!

And also, I've never really liked green just tastes too plain and nasty for me. But I may start trying to drink it because I've heard that it's really good for you and clears up your skin.

      I hope it works! (:

At wits end I started drinking green tea and using the bags topically. OMG in two days my skin is amazing. The redness is gone and the scarring is healing. I am absolutely amazed.
