How to improve your concentration

Updated on March 25, 2016

How important is concentration !

Concentration, or in fact the lack of it has always been an issue with us human beings. Time and again we've faced much difficulties in achieving our goals or even on the path of that achievement when there's a serious dearth of concentration. I've traveled through this phase too while growing up in my adolescence .

Hence, I've researched, summarized and practiced the below described hard hitting ways to improve focus and concentration. Now I think it's time I can preach them too because I know there's a baffled crowd out there just like the previous me who are going through this hassle. I wish and hope that after you've been through this lens, you'll definitely be willing to give these techniques a try. After all, where there's a will, there's a way.

UPDATE: You can never succeed or improve if you're a lazy ass. Here's an awesome lens on How to stop being lazy you need to visit before reading my lens further.

Tratak - A spiritual beginning to our destination

A candle to perform Tratak
A candle to perform Tratak

Tratak is an ancient Indian meditation therapy practiced by generations for centuries to attain peace of mind which helps in better focus that ultimately results in improvement in concentration.

1. Find an empty room with less noise (read distractions).

2. Take a candle and light it.

3. Keeping your spinal cord straight and level the candle in your line of sight.

4. Not focus on the tip of the flame and inhale and exhale slow breaths.

5. Think of the flame to come inside your body and illuminate your mind. Close your eyes gradually at this point.

6. While following the above process, protect yourself from unwanted disturbances.

Repeating this exercise daily for around a couple of months, you'll start feeling the difference in the amount of time you could concentrate while it will boost your confidence too. The best time to do this exercise is early morning before dawn.

Stop procrastinating - There's a thing called deadline.

Set your priorities and follow them
Set your priorities and follow them

A habit of ignoring high priority tasks and giving more importance to low priority crap is known as procrastination. We often tend to lose ourselves in unwanted and time wasting activities that are not going to provide us with any fruits. And while we savour the temporary joy in these deeds, the ones which are of higher importance are neglected resulting in frustration and restlessness. The following are the primary reasons of today's procrastination:

1. A humongous amount of time spent on social networking sites.

2. The same spent in gaming.

3. With availability of high speed broadband, streaming movies is much easy.

4. Playing the whole day with newly attained gadgets.

5. Just sitting around and sipping smoothies.

and many more...

While some might argue that 'All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy', my only point is not wasting more than your allotted time in these activities and certainly not at the cost of your work or other more important chores.

Sort out your sleep problems - Often neglected by today's hasty generation

Sweet dreams.
Sweet dreams.

Life today has become quite hectic. You schedule the present day before a week yet can't fit in peace in any of the block. Your body's metabolism should be given rest for coping up with you while you run around doing your job. Thus, an 8 hour sound sleep is must for every one of us to maintain a stable mind. if you need help sleeping, then contact your doctor as soon as possible.

You skip this important thing and put yourself in trouble not only in the aspect of health but also decline in focus, memory loss and also decrease in concentration. Late night slobbering and getting up late results in a confused state as well as an irritating mindset through which you battle all day. Therefore, take a considerable amount of sleep to keep you fresh and ready to kick in at all times but also keep in mind that excess of anything is harmful.

Real world exercise - A transparent way to test yourself

The best part of this lens comes here which is also my favourite one. I've developed this exercise as a part of my effort to improve my concentration. I guess you're gonna like practicing it too. What I do is whenever I travel on road and am driving, I start counting the number of horns being jabbed by the on goers, believe me it's tough to keep up and very easy to get lost in other thoughts. Try to keep yourself focused as much as possible and the point at which you realize that you've lost the count, punish yourself. You read that right, park your vehicle at a safe zone for at least 5 minutes and you'll realize that you could have saved those 5 minutes from being wasted if you had paid more attention to the horn count.

Repeat this exercise again and again and every time you drive. Within no time you'll start putting more effort to save those 5 minutes and improve your concentration. This is augmented reality guys but the most important part in this is that you've got to be honest with yourself.

Keep a watch buddy - We can use a well wisher

A watch buddy
A watch buddy

Yes, if there’s our best friend or a parent around to keep a watch on us whether you’re performing well or not, it’s gonna make you more conscious towards the work and you automatically do well in it. Your buddy can scold you or even give you a little nudge if they think you’re losing focus. This exercise is not required to be carried for a long time because when our pride’s riding upon us, we are certainly gonna improve.

Prevent distractions - They're the silent causes

They always distract us
They always distract us

Have you been tempted to put on your headphones and listen to Eminem while working on an important project? I used to do it all the time when one fine day I realized that it not only made me lose my focus but I couldn't get my creativity and imagination flowing in my work because my sub-conscious mind was always murmuring the lyrics along with the rapper. It's called a distraction.

There are several types of distractions which successfully hamper your concentration and some of its examples are texting or chatting while working, listening to music while writing an article, talking with someone in person or on phone, any sort of noise or disturbance coming from another source when you're trying to focus on your work, you're constantly being nabbed by your family member over some petty issue or other and many more. Prevent these distractions from getting yourself away from the ambience you managed to create at your work.

Reward yourself on success - Yes you are praiseworthy

My reward :)
My reward :)

This part seems funny but humorously important because it indirectly affects in developing our concentration. Whenever you complete a job before its deadline, congratulate yourself and give yourself an award. It could be an hour of television, or gaming, a trip to an amusement park or even just a bowl of ice cream.

You're gonna feel great about it, it'll make you work harder towards your goal and ultimately it's gonna improve your concentration to do it perfectly. There's always a sense of joy in successfully getting a job done inside a time limit, make it commendable.

Conclusion

The above discussed points may not have got you interested in following them but they might have at least succeeded in making your realize that concentration is very important in any part of our work and it’s not gonna come in pills, tablets or TVS products. It’s you who’s responsible to develop and improve it for your own good. I hope you find this lens even little but helpful. Thank you.

Interesting topic and some great tips for improving concentration. I find sleep to be very important as you mentioned. I like to keep my sleep schedule so that I can get my 8 hrs and also not need to rush when I wake. If I wake and need to rush to work or some other activity I find that my concentration can be adversely affected. I would much rather wake up run through my daily schedule in my mind, then concentration is much easier.

Thanks for the tips I will surely try to put them into practice.

Great Lense. Everybody claims to ADHD, but I think we need to slow down a bit and focus on the task at hand instead of doing too many things at once. The ultimate goal is peace of mind, anyway, right?
