How to prevent hair loss

Though hair loss problem is curable and reversible in many cases but there are instances where hair growth is impossible due to the permanent damage of hair follicles and scalp. Moreover,hair loss problem is genetically programmed and all the factors that cause hair loss aren’t under your control. But, with accurate diagnosis and proper treatment you may arrest your hair loss problem. Here are some things you can do to take good care of your hair and prevent hair loss (according to the physician guideline):-

Take care of your hair:

  • Don’t apply heating or drying procedures to your hair frequently. Heating weakens the hair proteins as constant heating and drying leads to brittleness and fragility of the hair which cause hair loss. Natural drying is the best for your hair. However, try to minimize the usage of hair dryers, hot brushes, hot curlers, hot rollers and hair straighteners.


  • Don’t color/dye your hair more often than 6 – 8 weeks. Try to semi-dyeing rather than full dyeing.


  • Give more focus on the style of your hair. Some styles require tight pulling and ultimately lead hair loss. For example, tight ponytails, cornrows, braiding tightly and plaits can cause hair loss when done on a regular basis.


  • Avoid layered haircut because it loses many hairs from your head.

Hair washing can be a part of your hair loss prevention process. Regularly hair washing will keep your hair and scalp clean, thus prevent the chances of infections. Use a mild shampoo that suits with your hair and skin. Besides, try to avoid brushing wet hair as in this state hair remains soft and if you want to comb , must use a wide toothed comb. Moreover, avoid rubbing the hair vigorously after washing it, because it leads to hair breakage. Simply pat it dry .

Prevent dandruff:

Dandruff is a very common, annoying and embarrassing problem which may influence hair loss. It is thought to be caused by a fungus called ‘Malassezia’. Dandruff can be persistent and needs consistent treatment. However, there are various over-the-counter shampoos for treating dandruff. If you try one and don’t get the desired result, move on to the next. Following are the examples of four anti-dandruff shampoos:

  • Zinc pyrithione shampoos such as Head&Shoulders, American crew anti dandruff shampoo etc. which contain an antibacterial and antifungal agent (zinc pyrithione) that fight against fungus.


  • Ketoconazole shampoos, such as Nizoral, contains a broad antifungal agent.


  • Selenium sulfide shampoos, such as Selsun Blue, can prevent cell turnover and control fungus. But , these shampoos may discolor the blond and gray hair, so, follow the user direction properly and rinse well.


  • Coal tar shampoos, such as Denorex,Neutrogena T/Gel, contain coal tar which slows the cell turnover and reduces the formation of dandruff’s scaly flakes.


Avoid stress

Try to get your stress under control and don’t obsess with your hair loss problem as it can further worsen the situation. Stress creates a bad effect on our body as well as on our hair. Moreover, it may convert the Anagen hair into Telogen hair and cause hair loss. To stop the stress do some exercise, meditation or yoga and get adequate sleep. These will keep your mind calm. Moreover, physical activity also encourages better blood circulation including your scalp.


Eat nutritious foods:

By eating nutritious foods you can keep your scalp healthy as well as your hair and it is possible to slow down the hair loss by healthy diet. Following nutritional factors can prevent or minimize the hair loss problem:

Protein:

Protein is essential to strengthen the hair and it should come from your diet, not from the shampoo. A deficiency in protein can influence the hair loss problem while adequate protein can supply more amino acids which strengthen the hair. Best sources of protein are seafood, white meat poultry, lean beef, pork tenderloin, protein bars, soy, eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese and beans. Besides, vegans, dairy free consumers and others can get better non animal proteins from tempeh, tofu, peanut butter, whole-wheat bread, brown rice, lentils, broccoli, potatoes, nuts and beans.

Biotin:

It is a vitamin B and important for healthy hair.Few good sources of biotin are swiss chard,wild salmon, eggs, liver,soybeans,whole wheat bread,sunflower seeds,peanuts,almonds,cauliflower, tomatoes,romaine lettuce, raspberries, carrots,walnuts etc.

Zinc:

Zinc is an important nutrient for hair nourishment. Some good sources of zinc are oysters,lean beef,turkey, lamb, wheat germ,pork, chicken, nuts, pumpkin seeds, beans, spinach etc.

Omega-3 fatty acids:

Omega-3 fatty acids prevent the hair becoming dry and brittle and keep the hair healthy.Some good sources of omega-3 fatty acid include tuna, salmon, flaxseeds, mackerel, walnuts etc.

Iron:

Iron is an essential mineral for our body as it helps us to be healthy and get healthy hair. The best sources of iron are liver, pork, beef, fish, beans, fortified cereal, pumpkin seeds etc.. However, vegetarian women may experience a deficiency in iron compared with other people.

Vitamin C:

Vitamin C helps with proper absorption of iron. So, eat foods daily that contain vitamin c. Good sources of vitamin c are citrus fruit,green leafy vegetables,tomatoes,salad, baked potatoes etc.

Avoid foods that inhibit hair growth or encourage hair loss:

You should not eat those foods which encourages hair loss. Avoid very low calorie liquid diets as it depletes your energy as well as encourages hair loss. Besides, avoid eating raw egg whites not only these harbor bacteria can harm you but also it contains a substance which binds biotin (essential for healthy hair) and prevent its absorption.

Test your hair if you are concerned:

You can test the hair by yourself whether you are suffering from hair loss problem or not. This test is known as ‘tug test’. Hold a bunch of hair (about 20 to 30 hairs) by your thumb and index finger, pull it slowly and firmly. If more than 6 hairs come out at the same time, you may have hair loss problem. But don’t worry, this is not the last word; instead, you should consult with a doctor or dermatologist if you think you are losing more hair than normal. Your doctor will take the relevant hair tests like thyroid test, iron deficiency test or skin biopsy where needed. Remember, we daily lose a lot of hairs naturally.

If you consider taking supplements, first talk to your doctor, he or she will prescribe required supplements. Usually these types of supplements contain biotin, iron, inositol, vitamin c, saw palmetto etc.

Treatment can be taken to prevent hair loss and it depends on your background and personal needs. But, your first line defense is accurate diagnosis because temporary hair loss usually remedies itself while for the constant hair loss problem or pattern baldness, you may consider proper treatment and some treatments are followed:

Medications:

Few medications can slow or prevent hair loss such as Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia). Minoxidil is used for both men and women and it is sprayed onto the scalp twice daily while Finasteride is used only for men and it is taken orally. Besides, spironolectone and cyproterone acetate may be used in some cases. However, Finasteride has side effects and recent study has shown that Finasteride linked with potentially irreversible sexual dysfunction.So, you must consult with your Doctor and he or she will prescribe you the appropriate medicine for your hair loss problem.

Corticosteroid for alopecia areata:

Corticosteroid injections are effective in increasing hair growth and very common to treat alopecia areata among adults. Injection is directly given into the hairless patches of the scalp to stimulate hair growth. However, oral corticosteroids and topical ointments can be used in some cases and you must consult with your physician to take corticosteroid.

Contraceptive pill:

Contraceptive pills have a detrimental effect on hair as most of the pills contain high level of two male hormone derivatives, levonorgestel and norethisterone ( Progestines), which are linked with hair thinning. Surgical procedures:

Follicular unit transplant (FUT):

In Follicular Unit Transplant, hair is transplanted into natural occurring hair follicular units (each follicular unit contains 1-4 terminal hair follicles). Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the most advance hair transplant methods and the main difference from FUT is that FUE doesn’t need a removal of the complete hair strip. In FUE, the individual hair follicle is removed from the back and side of the head and grafted into the bald areas. The main advantage of FUE is that it involves least damage to the donor strip areas. Moreover, it is less bleeding and gives a natural look all over the head.

Scalp reduction:

Scalp reduction is done to cover the bald areas at the top and back of the head. In this procedure some bald skin is removed and it is closed with the hair containing skin.


Flap surgery:

Flap surgery is used when the extensive hair transplant is required. During this surgical procedure, a balloon like device (tissue expanders) is implanted under the hair bearing skin by the surgeon. Then this tissue expanders are inflated with normal saline (which is injected) about a period of weeks. It encourages to grow the new skin cells. It can be said that don’t be over concerned if you are experiencing hair fall problem as most of the hair fall problems are temporary and by eating proper healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, doing physical exercise, using a mild shampoo and soft brush you can arrest your hair fall problem. But, if you are experiencing a constant hair fall problem and losing more and more hair, you must consult with a doctor or dermatologist. He or she will diagnose the main cause of your hair loss problem and give you the proper treatment.
