A tragedy inevitably happens, a death of a loved one, getting laid off from your job or a case of unemployment, marriage problems involving domestic abuse, unsuccessful business transactions and the list goes on. You suddenly start questioning what life’s purpose is or if things would change for the better but as the days go, you feel worse and nothing seems to have any sense nor meaning as you try to lift yourself out of a destructive melancholic pattern.

No one seems to understand, your mind is breaking down, you’re thinking dozens of things by the minute but everything is meaningless. Life lost its passion, your favorite dish doesn’t bring your appetite back, the care and concern of family and friends fall on deaf ears, you feel like an object without human feelings and you feel that your emotional and mental condition is not the usual, there’s something dangerously different, there’s something wrong. Negative memories haunt you, flashbacks of failures and alarmingly dark images flood your mind, anger, rage, bitterness? The emotions are all mixed up and hopelessness starts to creep in and it does not happen for only one day but it consistently stays from the moment you wake up until you sleep at night. What must be done when you start feeling this kind of heaviness or mental anguish? Is it normal or are these signs that one has “clinical depression” which is the most severe form of depression. How do you fight it? Is there a remedy, a solution to make this situation go away?

“Major Depression” is a constant sense of hopelessness and despair, also known as “clinical depression”.

Signs of being in a state of clinical depression are that, one finds it difficult to work even in performing the simplest of jobs, there is a struggle to study and sleep, a loss of appetite to eat and withdrawal from daily activities including spending time with families and friends.

A number of people suffer from “clinical depression” once in their lives while some have a recurrence or repetitive medical condition of the same over the years.

Most individuals feel sad or discouraged at certain times or seasons in their lives however clinical depression could be detected if one has a depressed mood most of the day, most especially during mornings, including a loss of interest in regular and daily activities, social relationships and even with doing their hobbies. Such symptoms are clearly seen every day for 2 weeks or more. Some other symptoms might include the following:

  • Impaired concentration, indecisiveness
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day
  • Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day (called anhedonia, this symptom can be indicated by reports from significant others)
  • Restlessness or feeling slowed down
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
  • Significant weight loss or gain (a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month)

  • Losing a loved one through death, divorce, or separation and suffering tremendous grief and sadness.
  • Social isolation or feelings of being deprived
  • Major life changes such as moving, graduation, job change, retirement
  • Personal conflicts in relationships a significant other such as a spouse or a superior which involves Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse
  • Tragedy, accidents wherein one got involved or someone in the family

Consequences or Negative Effects of Untreated Depression

If the illness has not been treated or the person suffering depression refuses to seek treatment, the effects would be increased chance of destructive behavior such as alcohol or drug addiction. It may also result to overlaying problems at work and may even destroy relationships. The clinical depression affects the way one eats and sleeps since it is a kind of sickness that is conditioned on one’s mood and thoughts and it will definitely affect the way one feels about himself, as well as the people around the depressed person.

“Untreated Depression” may go on for days, weeks, months and years. Proper treatment must be done through antidepressants and psychotherapy. In the absence of treatment, depression takes a serious toll on physical health most especially patients who are recovering from heart ailments have trouble making health choices and they also have difficulties following the instructions of doctors as well as face all the problems that their illness carries.

There is also a change in sleep patterns such as the appearance of insomnia that accompanies with it energy loss, tiredness and lack of concentration. Furthermore, untreated depression may have the effect of having weight gain or loss, uncontrollable emotions of hopelessness, rage and irritability.

In addition to the above signs and symptoms are headaches, digestive disorders or chronic pain. This being the case, clinical depression may result to a disability in several areas of one’s life such as his work, family and even social life. Not only is the family affected because it is not easy taking care of a depressed person, such illness may even result to death or suicide if not treated.

According to the Institute of Mental Health, an average of 90% of the population who died from suicide have clinical depression and mental disorders or abuse of alcohol or drugs.

The following are signs of suicide:

  • Talking, writing, or thinking about killing or hurting oneself or threatening to do so
  • Depression (deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating) that gets worse
  • Having a "death wish;" tempting fate by taking risks that could lead to death -- for example, driving through red lights
  • Losing interest in things one used to care about
  • Making comments about being hopeless, helpless, or worthless
  • Putting affairs in order, tying up loose ends, or changing a will
  • Saying things like "it would be better if I wasn't here" or "I want out"
  • A sudden switch from being very sad to being very calm or appearing to be happy
  • Suddenly visiting or calling people one cares about
  • Talking about suicide
  • Increase in drinking alcohol or using drugs
  • Writing a suicidal note
  • Watching well publicized murder and/or suicide reports in the media
  • Conducting on-line searches on ways to commit suicide
  • Seeking methods to kill oneself, such as getting a gun or pills

  1. Goal Setting – start small. Make a list of things you would like to do during the day such as washing the dishes or reading a book. Setting a goal will make you feel confident and better.
