Losing Weight (Body Fat) - Why Bother?

Updated on May 12, 2011

When it comes to losing weight (body fat) the formula is really very simple, burn more calories than you consume. Simple to say, not so simple to implement, I hear you say. But why would you want to bother in the first place?

Why do you want to lose weight? Is it for one of the following reasons;

  • a special occasion,
  • you're just sick of having to buy larger clothing sizes,
  • you want to get back to a healthy body size,
  • you want to run a marathon,
  • your partner thinks you're fat.

Are the above silly questions? What does the reason for losing weight matter? It may not seem important but the reason for losing weight can play a big part in your outlook. Lets look at some examples.

A Special Occasion

If you are losing weight for a special occasion, lets say a wedding for example, what happens when the wedding is over? You've just lost your reason for losing weight.

  • Don't try and lose weight just for one off, special occasions, you need a more long term reason.

Running A Marathon

If you are going to run a marathon, such as the Boston or London marathons, you will need far more dedication than for a standard weight loss regime. Are you ready mentally for all the pain and glory. What if you fail? Are you going to run a marathon every year?

  • A long term healthy living through exercise plan is good but takes dedication. This is a good way to lose those pound, but is it sustainable.

My Partner Thinks I'm Fat

A difficult one! Do you do this because you want to or because someone else wants you too? Your partner is in an ideal position to help you and to motivate you but at the end of the day it's you and your reasons that count. It's your determination and perseverance that will drive you to your goal. It's not easy sometimes, we all have our moods and this is where your partner can really, really help. They can laugh with you through the good times and pull you through the bad times.

A Healthy Body Size

You want a health body size. A very good reason. Notice I did not say slim, skinny, thin etc. A healthy body size depends upon many things, particularly age. This I think is the best reason for losing body fat. A health body and a healthy mind should be our goal.

Wanting to keep your weight in the correct body mass index (BMI) range is simply a very good reason for losing weight. The range is quite wide so you don't need to watch those pounds on a daily basis and going up and down by a couple of pounds will not hurt. So you can have that nice meal, or go to the party, or celebrate without having to worry about a dieting regime.

The Final Rule

Help all those you can, enjoy yourself, live long and prosper.
