Can't I just use Epsom salts?
Epsom salt is also known as magnesium sulfate, which makes many people think that it gives the same therapeutic benefits as magnesium flakes, supplements or oils.In fact, magnesium sulfate is a form of the mineral that is less able to be absorbed, so it will sooth sore muscles but won't provide much more therapeutic benefit than that.If you're using magnesium as a simple way to relax sore muscles after a long day of work, Epsom salts are a great product. A nice foot soak in the evenings will make you feel better.But it won't give you the health results that magnesium chloride will, as it has a higher absorbability.
2. Relaxing magnesium bath
An easy way to get your daily magnesium is to run a warm bath and put about a cup of magnesium chloride flakes in there. Don't run the water too hot - you want to absorb the minerals rather than eliminate them.Foot baths are also nice - I use about 1/4 magnesium flakes in a small foot tub.
What they don't tell you on the packet
Be careful not to spray or apply magnesium on any area of your body that is especially sensitive - it can burn! If you wouldn't rub salt on the area, don't apply the magnesium there.
I found out the hard way after rubbing magnesium oil on my newly shaved legs.If you've already applied the stuff and it's starting to itch and tingle, simply wash it off with water.
3. DIY Magnesium Chloride Lotion
Some people find magnesium oil a bit drying or annoying to use. This simple homemade lotion recipe is a great solution because it moisturises the skin while delivering health benefits.My favourite way to use this lotion is to rub it on my feet, put socks on and go to sleep. I wake up with the softest feet ever!
- 1 cup magnesium chloride flakes
- half cup warm water
- half cup avocado or sweet almond or olive oil
- half cup shea butter
- 2 Tbsp beeswax
- - Add the magnesium flakes to the warm water and stir or shake until the flakes have dissolved. This is now magnesium oil.- Heat the remaining ingredients in a small saucepan until the beeswax is melted.- Let cool slightly, then blend at the lowest speed in a blender.- Very slowly add the magnesium oil to the blender, drop by drop until it is all added.- Turn up the speed, and blend until the mixture is thick, pale and smooth.- Pour into a glass jar and let cool completely before use. It will become thick and creamy once cool.
4. DIY Magnesium Drink recipe
Some people don't have the time or energy to apply magnesium oil topically every day. Another easy way to get your magnesium levels up is to drink it.While oral supplements can lead to loose stools in some people, drinking the magnesium this way shouldn't have this effect as it is a smaller amount. Nevertheless, start the treatment slowly and check how your body reacts.One warning - magnesium chloride is very bitter, so drink it quickly!
- 20 grams or 0.7 ounces magnesium chloride flakes
- 1 litre or 1 quart warm water
- Add the magnesium flakes to the warm water, and shake or stir until the flakes have fully dissolved.Drink one small glass per day, diluted with juice or as is.
5. Magnesium flakes added to food
This suggestion is not for everyone, as magnesium has a salty and bitter taste that takes some getting used to.For an extra mineral boost, you can grind magnesium flakes into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder. Sprinkle a tiny amount on popcorn, grilled vegetables or into soups.You can also use your home-made or bought magnesium oil to spray onto foods and into drinks.
