The Importance of Goals

We know goals for being stepping stones to dreams but what if there were no dreams? Just goals. Committed to, absolutely-happening-goals. Keep your dreams for when you're sleeping. We're changing things up a bit. Even if, for you, it's only for the duration of this article - your goals are now as important and as major as your dreams.

The word "dream" implies fantasy. A person with a lot of dreams or with huge dreams would be known as a dreamer. I personally adore the word, not to mention that I am a self-proclaimed dreamer according to my bio on social media.

This being said, I'd rather be setting goals and getting goals than dreaming.

Your Goals Must Serve You

Have you ever heard of The Law of Attraction? How about Life by Design or The Secret? There are so many sources of information out there, people and organisations sharing an important message. The Proctor Gallagher Institute being one of my personal favourites.

"Life is what you make it". I know you've heard that phrase before. You must have. We dismiss the meaning of this phrase because of our subconscious paradigms. The majority of us don't believe that life is what you make it but we say it anyway. Maybe to fill an awkward silence, which is also behaviour created by a subconscious paradigm. You'd be surprised, if you don't already know, how much time you spend behaving and thinking subconsciously and not consciously.

Shift In Order = Shift In Vibration = Shift In Reality

By turning dreams into goals, we create a real shift in our vibrations. The vibrations are what makes the law of attraction work. So, think about this while you're reading this article:

  • Dreams are now Goals
  • Goals are now Targets
  • Tasks are Tasks

Your goals might now have become really big because they were your dreams. Don't let this intimidate you. All that means is that this is going to happen.

Transferring Dreams Into Goals

It's time to transfer your dreams into goals and see this "Goals, Targets and Tasks Method" in action. Remember, dreams are goals.

Goal: Luxury Family Holiday

Targets:

  • Book the holiday
  • Book travel
  • Buy suitcases

Tasks:

  • Compare travel prices
  • Go to X shop for suitcases

Once you have established the process of reaching your goal, you can begin to schedule your tasks. Comparing travel prices can be done on a day when you know you have a large gap in your schedule. Buying suitcases can be done on a day that you know you'll around the area of the shops. As long as you know what you need to do and when you need to do it by then you're much more organised than you were when you had a dream of a luxury holiday and only one or two tasks in mind that needed to be done. Come on, admit it.

When you break your targets down into tasks, you're able to see what you need to do next in order to reach your goals much more clearly. I intend to write another article on setting goals, targets and tasks in terms of time-management but for now, I wanted to concentrate on the big stuff. For my fellow "dreamers".

Ditching The Overwhelm

You're likely to find that you don't finish things you have started when you don't have clear goals, targets or tasks set. You might also notice that you focus your energy in the wrong places at times, not getting the important things done as a result.

Setting goals, targets and tasks guides you through your days so you don't have to play catch-up late at night.

Now that goals are much more exciting than they were before, that makes targets more exciting too. Now targets are goals. Say you had a goal weight, that's now your target weight. Your goal would be to maintain your goal weight or simply to be happy at a healthy weight.

An example:

Goal: to be happy at a healthy weight

Target:

  • 120lbs
  • ENJOYING exercise 5x per week
  • Staying hydrated

Tasks:

  • Cut out bread
  • Set reminders on phone for exercise
  • Make a new playlist for workouts
  • Log water intake in app

Transfer the tasks where necessary into your daily schedule


Monday

Unrelated tasks

Log water intake

Tuesday

Make workout playlist

Unrelated Tasks

Log Water Intake

and so on...

Although this makes targets and goals more exciting, it also means that some of your targets won't be so much fun. Perhaps one of your targets is re-registering for something boring but mandatory, it's all for the sake of your goals.

There are goals that you can't reach without having all of the boring stuff in place first and that's why it's important to apply to the appealing tasks and the less appealing tasks not necessarily the same priority but definitely the same certainty of completion.

Your targets are steps towards your goals, the tasks are the stepping stones to your targets.

The purpose of creating this shift is to enforce a motivation in you, as the reader, that will ultimately take you from chasing dreams to reaching goals.

      This is good stuff. For some reason I do not dream about doing things. It is like my brain is just wired to dream of notions and ideas. But setting goals, well, this is very helpful.
