Neck Liposuction-Guide to Neck Lipo and Neck Lift Procedures, Benefits, and Costs

Updated on February 11, 2010

Neck liposuction is a viable solution for those who want to get rid of their "turkey neck syndrome", improve appearance, and look younger.   Such a procedure can be ideal for people who have accumulated fat that is difficult to lose, despite exercise and a healthy diet.  Fat in the neck not only affects the appearance of the neck, but can also detract from the overall appearance of the body. This can make a younger person appear older, or a physically fit person appear out of shape.  Oftentimes, fat accumulation around the neck area is due to individual's genetic predisposition.

The great thing about this procedure is that the fat cells is permanently removed, so weight will not be regained in this area.  Liposuction can give the neck a new streamlined contour, enhancing the effect of facial features and improving the profile.  Neck liposuction has a high success and satisfaction rate.

Neck Liposuction Procedure and Ideal Candidates

Candidates will have an initial consultation with a surgeon establishing the desired final outcome of appearance. The surgeon will explain different options available, how the procedure will be performed, risks and limitations and costs. The surgeon records the medical history including weight, diet exercise, and medications. He/she will then conduct a physical exam and evaluate your skin, overall weight, skin and muscle tone, and the distribution of fat deposits.

Before the surgery, the doctor will mark the areas of the neck where the fat will be removed. The patient can be put under general anesthesia, local anesthesia, or a sedative for relaxation.

During surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision under the chin, just in front of the ears. Next, a cannula (thin tube) will be inserted to break up the fat and tone the area. Finally, the undesired fat is sucked out with a high power vacuum. The procedure for neck lipo typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour to perform.

Both male and female, young to old can get neck liposuction. The surgery works best for people who have extra neck fat and fairly tight neck skin. You can get liposuction of the neck if you have loose skin, only if the skin isn't hanging. If you have loose and hanging neck skin, the neck lipo may result in skin irregularities. In this case, it is probably best to have a neck lift procedure, or a combination of neck liposuction and lift.

Neck Lift Surgery

Like neck lipo, neck lift surgery is a type of neck cosmetic procedure that can improve the appearance of the neck.  Neck lifts are generally performed when there is skin hanging loose from the area.  A neck lift can also be combined with other procedures such as liposuction, face lift, and forehead lift.  Candidates who undergo neck lift surgery are in general good health.

Similar to a liposuction session, the surgeon place the candidate under anesthesia, and mark the areas of the neck to cut.  The surgeon makes a small incision under the chin, in front of the ears.  Then any excess fat is removed and the neck muscles are tightened.  Once this is done, the skin is re-draped over the neck.  Then, the  the excess skin is removed and the neck is closed with sutures.  The surgeon may also place a drain under the skin to collect any excess fluid that can cause increased swelling and discomfort.  This drain is usually left in for no more than two days.

Neck Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Process

Recovery from a neck liposuction and/or lift is very quick, mostly complete within 1-4 weeks, with little or no long-term scarring.  After surgery, patients are instructed to wear a compression bandage that wraps around the neck to keep the incision closed. Swelling and bruising may be apparent, but keeping on the wrap should get rid of it fairly quickly. Some discomfort may occur.

Neck Cosmetic Surgery as an Alternative Face Lift

Sometimes neck liposuction or neck lift can be a good alternative to a full face lift.  Neck lipo is less invasive than a face lift, with easier recovery. Face-lifting is riskier in that the skin may become irreversibly thinner and nerve damage is more likely to occur.

Neck cosmetic surgery is especially more beneficial for younger patients, and can do a good job tightening the skin.  Also, any scarring is hidden better under the neck than on/around the face.

Of course, neck cosmetic surgery can not treat the entire face, but there will be less bruising and swelling.

Neck Liposuction Cost

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a neck liposuction was $2,982. You can expect to pay between $2000 to upwards of $4000 depending on the procedure. A neck lift is a bit pricier ranging from $3000 to $15,000. These estimates do not include the costs of anesthesia, hospital stay, and other related expenses.
