Fight or Flight
Do you handle stress or add to it?
Stress is registered by the brain, which in turn triggers a 'fight or flight' response. The adrenal glands(two small glands located at the top of the kidneys) will then secrete a hormone by the name of adrenaline. This hormone triggers your heart to race, and blood pressure to rise, along with other various metabolic changes. It also triggers another hormone to be secreted, this hormone is called cortisol. Cortisol depresses immune function.
The fight or flight response can be triggered by a variety of situations, that come up in our daily lives. It might be as simple as a long line in the grocery store, or your boss passing you over for a promotion. Some stressors can't be avoided. However, an increase in the level of stress can be avoided. How, by some simple dietary changes, while you are experiencing a stressful situation
Some foods, and smoking will enhance the fight or flight reaction. Making it much worse than it has to be on the body. Caffeine, sugar, and nicotine are all adrenal stimulants. These stimulants when taken on their own in increased amounts can trigger a stress response in the body, yes, even when there is no external stress present.
So imagine what happens to your body if you are under stress, and add the stimulant caffeine, and sugar. Your stress level rises, most likely you will experience some physical symptoms, due to the fight or flight syndrome. Racing heart, sweaty, pounding head.
Now, I am not saying you have to give up coffee, and sugar, and heaven forbid smoking. I will suggest that common sense be considered? If stressed out, don't aggravate the problem by taking in well know stimulants.
The stress will be alleviated much safer and quicker if you take a bit of time to perhaps take a walk, take in some nice deep breaths, have a glass of milk.
