Pill reminder systems - The perfect useful gift for a senior citizen

Updated on September 7, 2012

Want to help your loved one remember to take their pills - that's why you're here, right?!

When I was my Mom's caregiver, I took care of making sure she got her medication and got it on time, but not everyone is as lucky to be able to stay home and be a fulltime caregiver. Heck! Even when I was a full time caregiver for Mom, I sometimes needed a reminder myself of when she needed to take her pills. So, that's the inspiration for this newest Squidoo article: Pill reminder systems - the perfect gift for a senior citizen (or anyone, for that matter).

Especially if your loved one lives alone, you might want to get one of these pill reminder systems for them to prompt them when to take their morning, evening, or dinner pills. Some of these pill reminders come in the form of an alarm clock that will hold up to 4 reminders at a time - some are more simple and just are compartments which hold pills. I used to use one of these pill organizers with Mom - I'd set it up once a week with all of her pills. That was not only convenient as I didn't have to go finding and opening medication bottles every meal but it was also a good reminder to reorder when the pill supply became low. And, by loading up the medications every week, I had a week to reorder and go to the pharmacy to retrieve the pills.

Pill reminder alarm clocks

I love the idea of an alarm clock with will ring and alert your favorite pill popper to do just that. I wish I'd had one of these when I was a caregiver.

Reasons a pill reminder is a good gift

Pill reminders for elderly parents or relatives or friends will be a much appreciated gift because...

  1. A medication reminder will help with that periodic forgetfulness we all have.
  2. If you're a long distance caregiver, giving a senior loved one a pill reminder will give you a small modicum of comfort - at least you know Mom or Dad is being alerted to medication times.
  3. Some medications require precise timing and that's where a pill reminder system really is a great gift for a senior citizen. Set it 5 minutes early to ensure you have time to get your dose as prescribed

Vibrating and Sound Pill Box Timer with 4 Daily Alarms

You'll rest easier knowing that the e-Pill medication reminder is on the job. This little box has 4 daily alarms which is very nice.

With both a loud beeping or a very strong vibration, this alarm clock will tell the medication taker to get on it! Reviewers love the thing and one reviewer even mentioned that her elderly mother set it up herself - it was that easy.

When considering a medication reminder system for the elderly (or anyone else)

Make sure to take into account the lifestyle of your loved one. For instance, will they take most of their pills at the house - in which case you would get a medication reminder alarm clock for the home - or, if they're on the go, consider a pill reminder watch.

Medication reminder watches!

I had no idea that a pill reminder watch even existed. But, once I found out about them, I though they were a great idea.

Ok, got comments? I'd love to hear what you have to say about this article or life in general. Thanks for stopping by.

My partner has a condition and occaisonally forgets his meds. Might be time to invest in one of these to make sure he doesnt forget.

@Scarlettohairy: Peggy, I took SO many pictures over the last 5 years and I'm grateful for every single one of them. Gertie will remain with us forever!

It's so nice to see Gert's smiling face (and the pudding mess is sweet!). This is a really good idea for so many people taking important medicines.

Taking pills in a timely fashion is so important with certain types of health situations. My brother missed taking his blood thinners which resulted in a stroke. So sad to see the consequences which were life-changing.
