Radiation Safety!

Updated on February 5, 2013

Fear Of Radiation!

The damage that the earthquake has caused to the nuclear plants in Japan has raised the fear of radiation once again. While this fear is very real to the Japanese people, it has spread around the world just as it did with the incidents at Chernobyl in the Soviet Union and at the Love Canal here in America.

While our government has informed us that any danger of radiation reaching the United States is minimal, this reassurance does little to quell the fears of many. Besides the fear of radiation traveling to America on the air currents, it has once again made us all realize that there is always a danger from our own nuclear plants.

We are told that every conceivable safety plan is in effect at our nuclear facilities, but Japan had also taken every safety precaution that they could conceive of. However it would seem that Mother Nature can make fools out of the best of us.

Signs And Symptoms

The signs and/or symptoms of radiation poisoning will depend on how much radiation you have absorbed. To show any signs of radiation poisoning, you will have absorbed at least one Gy(gray) of radiation throughout your entire body. More than six Gy causes death between two days and two weeks.

Nausea and vomiting will be the first signs of radiation poisoning. Diarrhea, headache and fever are also early symptoms.

Later symptoms include dizziness and disorientation, weakness, fatigue, hair loss, bloody vomit and stools, infections, poor wound healing and low blood pressure.
