What is Reflexology?

Updated on January 20, 2015

The Best Reflexology Equipment

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that aims to treat the mind, body and spirit, encouraging the body to work naturally to restore its own balance. Tiny nerve endings in the feet and hands correspond to different areas and organs of the body.

How does reflexology work?

Through stimulation and applying gentle pressure to the reflex points using the thumbs and fingers, the therapist aims to create an involuntary reaction in a particular area or organ. Thus restoring circulation, clearing toxins and balancing energy - homeostasis. Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe but reflexology works extremely well alongside conventional medicine. This therapy encourages the body to heal itself after illness or injury, it is extremely effective in relieving stress and inducing deep relaxation and therefore maintaining well being once good health has been restored.

In this lens I have acknowledged that not everyone can afford to attend a beauty salon or a treatment room for reflexology. What I have tried to do is pull together tried and tested reflexology equipment which will enable you to afford to have a reflexology session in the comfort of your own home. There are books and charts available which will help you find exactly where the desired pressure points are located, you can then start to experiment with your fingers or the tools shown here

Omni Foot Fantasy Massager

An excellent foot massager. This item is used by professional physiotherapist in order to reduce Plantar fasciitis. I bought it and use it daily. Both ends are useful - the roller at the beginning of the treatment and the other end for a deeper, and more focused massage. I highly recommend it.

Foot Reflexology Sandals - Improve circulation, accelerate metabolism and revitalize energy levels

It is believed by all reflexologists that the sole of the foot mirrors the body, with the left foot reflecting the left side of the body and the right foot the right side. Hence, it is deduced that pressing the sole in the opposite place will cause an advantageous effect to be felt in the respective part of the body. As mentioned, a perceptive area in the foot indicates a problem in the consequent organ in the body. Pressing on the appropriate trouble-spot can be an effective way of relieving pain and helping to restore the body's natural balance. It can also reduce stress, improve circulation, accelerate metabolism and revitalize energy levels.

Acu-Life Massage Sandals - Brown with Velcro

Massage Sandals Brown 11 w/ Velcro Toe Strap. Acu-Life Massage Sandals are based on the principle of reflexology, which has been practiced for at least 5000 years. Reflexologists believe that each important organ and muscle is connected by a network of nerves to a tiny point on the foot where energy terminates. Pressure applied to these nerve endings by Acu-Life's hundreds of little rubber "fingers" creates a stimulus. This sets in motion an electrochemical impulse, thus releasing healthful energy along the nerve to corresponding organs.

Being a professional Reflexologist I am a bit biased - this is one treatment that it should be compulsory for everyone to have at least once per month

Reflexology works! I had my feet worked on by a professional years ago for a sore jaw that I got from a dentist. I had the pain for 6 months. The next day after our session the pain was gone and never returned!

Oh I had no idea you could get these items. I do reflexology on my hands and feet everyday. The sandals would be so beneficial. Thank you for the information.
