Reiki: The Universal Life Force Energy
An introduction to Reiki
Reiki translates from the Japanese to mean Universal Life Force Energy. In short, it is what causes things to grow and to heal. Each and every person, plant, and animal relies on The Universal Life Force Energy for our day to day well being.
The ability to channel Reiki is what people generally mean when they mention Reiki. Only someone who has been attuned to Reiki by a Reiki master/teacher may channel Reiki. This ability to attune people all started with one person: Mikao Usui. In 1922, during a 21 day period of prayer and fasting, Dr. Usui (who had profound faith in both Christianity and Buddhism) had a revelatory spiritual awakening to the power of Reiki. He received from the Reiki Angels the ability to assist people by channeling Reiki energy. The Angels removed ancient etheric bonds placed lifetimes ago on his being at key channeling points. He felt surges of energy coursing through his body and it was revealed that he could share this energy with others. Reiki comes from a limitless source, larger than a mountain, larger than the ocean; larger even than this planet, solar system, galaxy and universe put together! It pervades everything, and is everywhere. What Dr. Usui ushered in - at that particular space time nexus, during a illuminating mystical experience - was the renewed ability of humans to channel that energy for the benefit of one another, and not to draw on their own personal supply when assisting another with it.
Personal experience with Reiki
I received my personal Reiki attunement from Jo Beth Eckerman on April 6, 1997 in Port Townsend Washington in the Seichim Reiki tradition. My teacher had Reiki training through both a Seichim Reiki teacher (more about what Seichim is here) and also from a teacher in the direct lineage of Dr Usui. While I believe that I have always had the ability to channel energy, it was only through this experience that I felt empowered to attune other people as well. As a side note, Jo Beth Eckerman channeled Reiki on herself to cure a life-threatening illness.
A book from one of the teachers in my lineage
In 1998, I
was further attuned by Vanessa Henz. As a Reiki Master it is fun and
recharging to get attunements from other Reiki Masters. For the next 2
years I lived simply and made my living from doing Reiki. I attuned
about 8 people to the master level during those years so they could pass on attunements to others, and about 20 more
to the level where they are able to channel Reiki to another person (or
situation) that may or may not be physically present. For example, I
sent Reiki to Michigan while I was living in Port Townsend!
Once I stopped living in my van and moved back to live in an apartment in Michigan, I found it increasingly difficult to make money as an alternative health care professional whose specialty was (and is) energy healing. So, after a few more years of struggling about, I gave it up almost completely, and have been focusing on other means of supporting myself since then. I do however still practice Reiki, on my self when I'm sick; and for other people when they ask; or if they are open to it, when I feel compelled to offer Reiki.
Essential aspects of Reiki
Reiki is a means for us to sharing loving touch with the intention of offering healing and grace. it is not associated with any one religion or segment of humanity; instead, it is available to everyone.
If there is a philosophy that is commonly shared by Reiki practitioners it is embodied in the following principles:
Just for today
Do not anger
Do not worry
Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
Please take a moment to consider
how the world would change if each of us took it upon them selves to
treat one another with respect; if we would focus on the tasks of today
and not worry about tomorrow and if we could all just relax when
confronted with unease or tension caused by anger.
It is the essence of these qualities that Reiki practitioners aspire to, and it is the potential that is in each one of us.
In closing, I would like to stress that Reiki is a safe and non-invasive way for people to share loving touch. While recent scientific research confirms Reiki to be effective, it has its roots in the mystical experience of it's founder Dr. Usui, and lays dormant in each one of us. Reiki is in every living thing. We can share it with people who are present, or who are at a distance. The most important thing about Reiki is it's universal message of love and peace; and more specifically how to achieve that individually by remembering and practicing the Reiki principles in thought, word and deed.
