"Sound" Sleep- Ambient Sounds and White Noise Sleep Aids
Nature Sounds for Sleep
For those who struggle with insomnia, or the effects of tinnitus, nature or ambient sounds can help you sleep. Sleep machines are a perfect way to blot out unwanted sounds that are keeping you awake. When it's late at night and your trying to get some shuteye. Lying there in bed you hear the dog a few houses away barking and barking at something. Your neighbors have their music loud enough for the whole neighborhood to enjoy. And the traffic on the nearby road never seems to quiet down regardless of the time. If you are a light sleeper, or are bedeviled by insomnia, things like this can keep you awake most of the night. You can't control the sounds outside your home, however you can mute them significantly. A sound machine helps you have your own little bubble to sleep in, without being disturbed all throughout the night.
It's high time you took matters into hand and adapt your bedroom into your own private zone devoid of outside noises and influences. Sound and white noise machines are created for that purpose drowning out the all but the loudest noises, instead offering a peaceful, surrounding sound to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. These machines help create a relaxing atmosphere for you, which can replace worrying when the dog next door will start up again.

These machines vary a bit depending on what your looking for. Some specialize in white noise which works especially well for tinnitus sufferers. Others have a variety of nature sounds from sounds of the ocean and rainfall, to wind and summer nights (crickets). If you like the ambient sounds of the rainforest, or the chugging sound of the night train rolling by, you'll be able to drown out that TV in the next room and get a good night's sleep.
After living in a series of apartments with paper thin walls, a fan had become my constant bedtime companion. Which worked great for most of the year. However when it got cold outside the last thing you want is a fan blowing cold air around. That was when I purchased my first sound machine. It was a relief to block out unwanted noises and still have a fan or ocean sound to sleep with. A sound machine can give you quiet time while allowing others in your home to enjoy the television without disturbing you. Also if you live near a freeway like I do, the white noise blocks the trucks and cars whizzing by at all hours.
The nature sound machines such as the Sleep Oasis (pictured right) are great because they offer the rain, and wind, and ocean waves sounds, along with a white noise setting. You can also get new sound cards to vary the sounds, so you don't have to hear the same thing over and over again. So you can go from ocean waves, to forest rain, to vacuum cleaner (if you prefer).

Tinnitus is a condition that causes ringing or buzzing in the ears. It can be caused by ear infections, wax build up, allergies, or exposure to loud sounds. Sound machines can help mask the sound to help the sufferer sleep. The white noise sounds are especially good for this condition. It helps modify the buzzing or ringing sound that could keep the person awake for hours. You may want to experiment what sounds are better for you. Some tinnitus sufferers just prefer a ambient sound such as rainfall, or the ocean waves crashing against the shore.
Nature sounds are peaceful and enjoyable, and it is easy to lull yourself to sleep with these playing in the background. It is even better if you live with others who sleep at different times. You can make your bedroom into a peaceful sleep zone blocking out the television and other irritants, and leaving others in your home able to enjoy their own pursuits without bothering you.The settings on most sleep machines allow you to run it for an hour if you just need a send off, to all night if you want to avoid being woken up.
